Thick as a Brick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thick as a Brick (1972) is a concept album by the rock band Jethro Tull.
With Thick as a Brick, the band set out to create an album deliberately integrated around one concept: a poem by an intelligent English boy about the trials of growing up.
The spoof newspaper had to be heavily abridged for conventional CD covers, but the 25th Anniversary Special Edition CD includes a partial facsimile; some content is missing, such as the original connect the dots activity and part of the "front page".

Ground and Sky review - Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Thick as a Brick is easily the best of what I've heard, and one of my favorite prog albums in general.
The album packaging of Thick as a Brick is, of course, legendary: an elaborately designed mock-newspaper (reproduced in full for the 25th anniversary CD) that gives life to the plight of little Gerald and his milieu, the village of St. Cleve.
Thick as a Brick is a theme-and-variations piece organized around a circle of fifths, as has already been mentioned.

The brick sends data wirelessly to a computer 100 feet away, where someone monitoring the information might access it from anywhere by dialing in over a phone line or using a computer network.
Several of the bricks embedded at various locations in a building could act as a kind of network, working together to provide a picture of the overall state of the structure.

JETHRO TULL Thick As A Brick reviews and MP3
But "Thick as a Brick" was the genuine article: a concept album in both content and form, mocking the philistine attitudes of cultural complacency in a single 40+ minute “song” cycle filling the entire album (with only one break, where the original vinyl LP had to be flipped over).
Thick as a Brick is very dear to me. It certainly holds the qualities you can desire from an early solid progrock album with emphasis on its emotional, rythmic music.
Thick As A Brick really stands out (tremendous catchy riffs, beautiful flute sound from Ian Anderson and I think that the best part of the album is when the band switches from the acoustic to the electric sounding part).

Nancy Street - Music - Thick as a Brick
Ian Anderson, composer of Thick as a Brick
I've always wondered about the technical aspects of the writing and recording Thick as a Brick, especially how it was composed, how the musicians learned the parts, how many overdubs and sessions were used, what equipment was used, etc. In July 2002 I finally heard the bonus track and many of my questions were answered.
When I first heard Thick as a Brick back in 1973 I was a rather "square" young classical music student, and I was absolutely gob smacked by its musical complexity.

Late one night, as a symbol of their protest, some students even bricked in the front entrance to the UW Administration Building, now called Gerberding Hall.
While he applauded the students' concern for their campus, he said the cost of laying down brick and ripping it out again was just too much.
The plans were to pave all the walkways with brick, including diagonal paths that were covered with crushed stone.

Thick as a Brick - The Official Jethro Tull Website
"Thick as a Brick" is perhaps Tull's definitive progressive rock album.
Born from a desire to really produce a concept album after the rock critics so dubbed the previous year's "Aqualung," the record features a rock first: one continuous song on both sides.
While the "Aqualung's" lyrics are fairly straightforward, "Thick's" metaphorical tendencies " are intentionally intricate, obscure, and bewildering as part of the running joke.

In his latest role, Levitt, thin as a reed, gets pummeled around quite a bit as the too-cool-for-school private detective Brendan Frye, investigating the shooting death of an ex-girlfriend at the hands of an elite group of kids selling drugs at his high school.
In Brick, Brendan pops up and down like a cartoon character: beaten down by Tugger, Brendan sucker-punches a mouthy jock; is locked, bleeding, in a trunk; served cookies and apple juice by The Pin's clueless suburban mom; and interrogated in an Orwellian but darkly funny scene by veteran action actor Richard Roundtree.
Brick was this immense technical challenge — he's struggling and fighting — whereas Neil in Skin is just taking it easy.

***** Jethro Tull -- Thick As A Brick
For the most part, between this and the previous year's Agualung, most people should have a pretty good feeling for what this band is about.
Thick As A Brick demonstrates the band at their peak, and while other efforts (like Songs From The Wood and Passion Play) would play on similar ground, there was nothing quite up to this level again.

One aspect of the joke is that "Thick as a Brick" means stupid, hence your "your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick." Ian's vocals are nice, but the beauty of this album lies in its instrumentals.

 THICK AS A BRICK
In 1996, John and Anita Mastandrea of Easton, Maryland constructed a 1,000-foot brick path on property they own along a creek that runs behind their home.
The path was built so that their daughter Leah, 19, who suffers from muscular dystrophy and is confined to a wheelchair, could enjoy the scenic Chesapeake Bay tributary called Globe Creek.
The family applied for a zoning variance from the County Board of Appeals arguing that the brick path was essential because Leah would not be able to negotiate a gravel path in her wheelchair while wood decking, which is permissible under the law, would be too slippery.

The roots of “Brick” lie in the ‘80s, when films like “Blade Runner” and “Blue Velvet” found inventive new uses for noir motifs while the malls were filled with teen comedies.
“Brick” attempts to synthesize the two—if “Blue Velvet” had never been made, I doubt Johnson would have been inspired to create his film.
It’s hard to know what parts were intentionally funny—audiences don’t always laugh in the same places—and this ambiguous combination of the goofy and harrowing set the stage for two decades of hip irony that “Brick” draws upon.

Brick is a film so desperate to dazzle you with its ingenuity that you sit through the first half-hour or so feeling like you’re watching a juggler as he strains to keep one chainsaw too many flying through the air.
Brick keeps you hooked even as its narrative particulars slip through your fingers, putting it in the company of some of the great noir pictures.
He also achieves some genuine pathos as he uses his cane to hobble along the beach at sunset, dorkily discussing Tolkien; he’s an old man before his time, and a little boy lost.

For Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" album, Ian Anderson writes the lyrics, composes the music, sings the songs, does the arrangements, and then finds time to play the flute, acoustic guitar, violin, saxophone, trumpet and whatever else is lying around.
Thematically "Thick as a Brick" is similar to "Aqualung." Again the writing is dense and enigmatic, but of course this is part of the fun.
For those who've never heard of it, Thick As a Brick is an entire album devoted to one song, entitled Thick As a Brick.
