Thief of Time, the 26th Discworld novel written by Terry Pratchett, is much more metaphysical than most of the previous books (other than Small Gods, perhaps).
Time is controlled by the Monks of History, an order that's been around for a long, long time.
There are times that it drags, and unfortunately one of those times is when everybody's in the thick of the problem.

Thief of Time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thief of Time is the 26th Discworld novel written by Terry Pratchett.
They do not reveal that this will imprison Time (the anthropomorphic personification) and thereby freeze time (the physical quantity) on the Discworld.
Thief of Time features the neologism Substition (first used by Pratchett in Jingo), a term denoting the opposite of superstition.

Four Fat Chicks -- Stealing Beauty: A Thief Retrospective
For this reason, the violence in Thief is among the most wrenching in any first person game: it is possible to finish both without ever harming anyone, and taking a life therefore becomes an act of greater cruelty than it might in a game where violence is part of the equation.
Thief introduced gamers to the "first person sneaker" style; it is the first major FPS that focused on stealth, caution, and planning over balls-to-the-wall action.
Thief 2 may be a more disappointing game than the original, but it is priceless as a tool for understanding Garrett and his world.

Review - Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett
Thief of Time comes complete with a full supporting cast of heroes and villains, yetis, martial artists and Ronnie, the fifth horseman of the Apocalypse (who left before they became famous).
The story of the Thief is rather more intricate than some of the others; it is basically a problem once again with the Auditors, out to tidy the world of humanity.
The monks had to rebuild time and all history, using all the sparebits left over from other periods, but the auditors want to rebuild the clock and get rid of all this pesky life for good.

He is an allegedly expert thief -- a fact that is oft repeated by all of the characters -- but in the course of the film he does not make a single surreptitious entrance or have a single successful job.
The rest of the film has Max repeatedly breaking into Beno's complex through various means, getting discovered every time and fleeing in a barrage of bullets and explosions, with never any idea as to where the disc is. Expert thief indeed.
Perhaps Max is not a top-notch thief so much as he has the good fortune to only rip off the perpetually stupid.

Howard could not convince the court to add time based on a "threat of death." He argued that the implication that Gray had a gun in the sleeve of his sweat shirt added to the level of his crime.
McAuliffe was equally unconvinced that Gray threatened to kill the teller, because there was never a time when Gray said he had a gun.
McAuliffe did add time to Gray's sentence for perjury and for sentencing at the high end of the range because of the danger to his family during his commission of the robbery.

Thief of Time, by Terry Pratchett   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Discworld has been saved in the nick of time so many times now that you might imagine it was running out of luck.
But Terry pulls it off every time, and now that he has become a brand it can surely only be a matter of time before some crazed sub-goth fanboy elf decides to create a Discworld emulator which will push out a book every week.
The only difference between this comic romp and the last, and the next, is a minor example of plot/character laziness by Pratchett, who creates twin heroes and their love interests, melds the twins into one, and then doesn't know what to do with the second love interest, so kills her.

The Monks of History monitor time for the Discworld, gathering time from points in history where it is not needed and sending it out to where better use can be made of it.
He is sent to be the apprentice of Lu-Tze, a legendary hero often mistaken for an aged and doddering sweeper.
Thief of Time introduces a number of new characters and stands alone well, requiring little in the way of back story or Discworld knowledge.

Although a clever idea, it was secondary to the plot of that novel and was thrown away, not to be revisited until Thief of Time, in which the monks of history are not only brought back on stage, but, in fact, given almost the entire novel.
Thief of Time does not have as many humorous moments as many of the earlier Discworld novels.
He is comfortable enough with the humor, his message and his style that he doesn't feel the need to put excessive humor in the book, but instead relies on the humor which he can include naturally.

In Thief of Time, the 26th Discworld novel, Terry Pratchett explores time paradoxes.

Pratchett focuses Thief of Time on them, with subplots carried by the underused character Susan Sto Helit and her grandfather.
In Thief of Time, however, Pratchett adds a new element, exploring the reason his horsemen went their own way as Death attempts to gather up his old comrades.
Thief of Time proves, as do so many of Pratchett's novels, that he is writing because there are topics he wishes to address in his books, not merely to continue a highly successful franchise.

In Discworld, Time is a resource managed by the highly capable Monks of History who store it and pump it from places where it is wasted, like underwater (how much time do fish really need?) to places, like cities, where there's never enough of it.
And so begins a literal race against Time for the monk Lu Tze and his apprentice.

There are a lot of "meanwhiles" in Thief of Time, which (as usual for a Discworld book) follows half a dozen different plotlines at once, and takes its own good time (so to speak) in bringing them together.
Where he once wrote hilarious slapstick parodies of fantasy novels, he's gradually tended toward writing light fantasy with a dark edge, spicing his stories with a little humor instead of structuring his humor with a little story.
As a result, there are few belly laughs in Thief of Time, which isn't trying to pack the comic punch of the giddier Discworld books.
