Thiene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thiene (population 22.000) is a city in the province of Vicenza, in northern Italy, located approximately 75 km west of Venice and 200 km east of Milan.
Thiene is also considered one of the richest cities in Italy.
Most famous are the Colleoni Castle, in the heart of the historical downtown and the adjacent Duomo.

Vicenza: Palazzo Thiene   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
In 1542 Marcantonio Thiene decided to extend the family residence, built by Lorenzo da Bologna in 1448 at the corner of Contrà Porti and of the lane known today as Stradella Banca Popolare.
On Marcantonio Thiene's death in 1560, this provincial palace, worthy of a Medici or Farnese, was still unfinished.
However though incomplete, Palazzo Thiene nonetheless represents quite an extraordinary masterpiece of Palladio's architecture, the peak of his imaginative prowess and, at the same time, the most universal and cosmopolitan Palazzo di Città in Vicenza, which was, indeed, a Palatial City.

Palazzo Thiene   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
In October 1542 Marcantonio and Adriano Thiene began to remodel their Quattrocentesco family palace to a grandiose project, which would have occupied an entire city block of 54 x 62 metres and faced onto Vicenza’s principal artery (today’s Corso Palladio).
The rich, powerful and sophisticated Thiene brothers belonged to that great Italian nobility which could moved with ease between Europe’s most important courts: they therefore required a domestic stage adequate for the cosmopolitan nobility of their guests who might visit them.
As a result only a small portion of the grandiose project was ever realised, but probably neither the Venetians nor the other Vicentine nobles would have accepted such a private kingdom in the centre of their city.

The collaboration of Alessandro Vittoria and Bernardino India is found at work again in the Sala di Psiche in Palazzo Thiene between 1552 and 1556.
The Eros and Psyche cycle in Palazzo Thiene is based on a tale from Apuleius "The Golden Ass" and depicts episodes from the story of the beautiful Psyche who had to overcome a series of difficult trials before being able to join Eros and being admitted to Olympus after gaining immortality.
Bernardino India depicts the celestial marriage of Psyche and Eros at the centre of the ceiling; Alessandro Vittoria is credited with four winged Victories in the lunettes, modelled in the Mannerist style inspired by Parmigianino.

The Villa Thiene at Quinto, like the family palace in Vicenza, was probably built for Marcantonio and Adriano Thiene according to a project by Giulio Romano then modified by the director of the building works, Palladio.
Overlooking the river Tesina, it is situated at the centre of the Thiene’s two great agricultural courts.
The project proposed a solution quite different from that in other Palladian villas: the structure is dominated by a great barrel-vaulted loggia much higher than the rest of the building, while the exterior is articulated with Doric pilasters which are doubled-up on the shorter sides.

 LEONORA SANVITALE - biography
This is unlikely to be true, however, as in May 1575 Thiene refused to commit to marrying Leonora until he had seen her.
Thiene himself travelled twice to Rome to petition the Pope, and after the second attempt in September 1575, a facoltà di concessa was granted to allow the union to take place.
Thiene wrote to Cardinal Farnese, saying that he had placed himself in God's hands, who had seen fit to bless him with the joy of his son's birth, only to call Leonora to him.
