Thiers was premier in 1836, but his projected intervention against the Carlists in Spain caused his dismissal.
Elected (1848) to the constituent assembly, Thiers was a leader of the right-wing liberals and bitterly opposed the socialists.
Thiers supported Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (later Emperor Napoleon III) for president of the French republic, but his opposition to Bonaparte’s coup in Dec., 1851, led to his arrest and exile.

 Adolphe Thiers Summary
Thiers himself was one of the animators of the 1830 revolution, being credited with "overcoming the scruples of Louis Philippe," perhaps no Herculean task.
Thiers insisted on using legal means to prosecute the thousands of prisoners taken by the army, and over 12,000 were tried by special courts martial; of these 23 were executed, and over 4,000 transported to New Caledonia, from where the last prisoners were amnestied in 1880.

Thiers entered politics early: during the revolution of 1830, it was he who persuaded a scrupulous and hesitant Louis-Philippe d'Orléans to accept the crown.
Thiers remained in opposition throughout the Second Empire (1852-1870), notably attempting to prevent the foolish war with Prussia.
Thiers experienced his finest triumph in 1877 (the year of his death) when Léon Gambetta proclaimed him 'liberator of land' for having rid France of the Prussians.

Although one of the founders of the regime, Thiers helped undermine the July Monarchy by supporting the repressive September laws as minister of the interior in 1835, by voicing opposition to Guizot's tepid foreign policy and by the inflexibility of his domestic policy in the 1840s.
Forced from power in May 1873 by the royalist majority in the national assembly, Thiers remained in parliament until 1876 as the leader of the center-left and voted in favor of the republican constitution of 1875.

The Oberlin drawing of Madame Thiers was done in Paris in July 1834 around the time of Ingres's appointment as Director of the Académie de France in Rome.
Far from representing any warmth or friendship between Thiers and Ingres, this portrait was undoubtedly presented to the powerful minister in order to help insure, or to render obligatory thanks for, the coveted Italian appointment.
