Thievery Corporation - PopMatters Concert Review
Thievery Corporation's sound doesn't come from a background of sweaty nightclubs and till-dawn-do-us-part relationships, but from a love of U.K. groups like the Specials, Madness, Secret Affair and the Style Council that leads them onto soul, jazz, bossa nova and Jamaican music.
Since forming in 1995, Thievery Corporation have come a mile, and the whole sound sways from eastern sitar -- on songs like "Facing East" -- to dub to a soulful jazzy syrup that pours out and defies definitive categorisation.
If there were barriers between the audience and performers then the Thievery Corporation were pulling them down, as this turned into an event and a celebration as much as it was a gig.

Their output typifies fashionista mood music-- music not meant to be listened to, but to be displayed as a marker of jaded sophistication.
Thievery Corporation understand that in a city where Moby's Play is perceived as cutting-edge, they don't have to try too hard-- all it takes is to remember never to release anything that hasn't been exhaustively tried and tested, and in service for years.
The duo realizes that a smattering of international elements-- a brief tabla sample here, an oud there-- will confer apparent substance on tracks that are never to be listened to, but rather to become part of the daily, accessorizing ritual that is the lives of the city's "elite".

Thievery Corporation is the project of two Washington (D.C.) disc jockeys, Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, who first met in 1995, when Hilton opened the Eighteenth Street Lounge A passion for reggae, bossanova and jazz led to the ultra-drugged dub singles 2001 Spliff Odyssey (Eighteenth Street Lounge, 1996), Shaolin Satellite and Universal Highness.
It is not surprising that the overall effect is one of a film-noir soundtrack, a more intense and cathartic version of Barry Adamson's imaginary scores (particularly Until The Morning, but also Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes Out, sung by Icelandic vocalist Emiliana Torrini, a radio-friendly trip-hop number).

And though the Thievery Corp.'s trademark confluence of chilled trip-hop, time-stretched dub, and casual musical globetrotting initially appears as tranquil as ever, beneath this false serenity churns an undercurrent of political anger, disillusionment and alienation that helps charge the album with enhanced fervor and vitality.
Although the track features the bug-eyed paranoid isolation Byrne is famous for (with lines like "Save bottles of water and flour and sugar/ Turn off the AC and hang up the bedsheets" nodding politely to the Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime"), the backing Latin rhythms and shimmer of keys never really congeal into anything memorable.
On this track, as well as during such brief instrumental numbers as "Holographic Universe", Thievery Corp. fall victim to their lazier, more antiseptic tendencies and their sound drifts dangerously close to the type of innocuous, Latin-whiffed wallpaper that Pottery Barn compiles to sell to your sister.
