		Contemporary composers of thillana, Vidwan Madurai N. Krishnan, Lalgudi Jayaraman and Dr. Balamurali Krishna were honoured on the occasion.
		Their thillanas were analysed by Chitra Visweswaran, S. Rajeswari and Saraswathi Sundaresan, alongwith dance demonstration by various groups.
		This was followed by 'Kalinga Nardhanam' of Oothukadu Venkatasubbaiyer choreographed in the thillana format by young dancer Narendra.

		DEMO 1 : The dancer begins the thillana with the addami (a kind of head movement) followed by what is called the "mai adavu".
		To the same syllables, the dancer is able to perform a variety of adavus and also maintain the tala.
		In this particular thillana, the dancer prays to Goddess Abhirami (another name for Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva), to shower her blessings on the ruler of the place called Ramanathapuram.

		On this album, he has a Western violinist, an alto saxophonist, a bassist, a guitarist, a keyboardist, a veena player and a couple of vocalists, one of whom is distinctly Carnatic-based and the other eclectic but sings in English.
		The Carnatic influence appears through his percussion on all tracks (especially the ghatam), as well as in the veena on the last two ("Sindhu and Thillana") and vocal on the last.
		All the musicians contribute to the abundance of solo improvisation on the album.

		and the other thillana which has been sung by both priya sisters and S.P Ram is in the ragam: madhuvanthi, starts out as thaka dhim tha dhim....need the lyrics for that too.

		It's about a week since THILLANA, the popular Bay area music band, did their annual bash (proceeds of which will be used for Vibha's projects in India), and also took the opportunity to bid farewell to Alex Babu, one of the guys who brought the band together (and is now moving back to India).
		Also, in what is now a Thillana tradition, the RagaMan wrote an original composition Mann Vasam dedicated to Vibha, which reminded one of lyrics from yester-year songs - simple, philosophical, evocative (the lines used above are from that composition).
		Of course, I am a part of thillana and I have seen and heard the dialogues from closer quarters.
