The Thing (Benjamin Jacob "Ben" Grimm) is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe, a founding member of the superhero team The Fantastic Four.
He is portrayed by Michael Bailey Smith (as Ben) and Carl Ciarfalio (as the Thing) in the former and Michael Chiklis (in both roles) in the latter, where general consensus holds his to be the most comic-accurate portrayal in the film.
Thing is also the traditional host of a poker game held regularly that is open to most of the superhero community.

The Man-Thing is a fictional comic book creature created by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, and featured in various Marvel Comics titles, the most prominent of which was written by Steve Gerber.
Unlike the intelligent and plant-based Swamp Thing of DC Comics, the Man-Thing is a nearly mindless mass of slime with no particular affinity to any living thing, but who nevertheless often becomes an accidental hero as it stumbles upon various crime and horror scenarios.
The Man-Thing has often been erroneously described as Marvel's attempt to imitate the similar and more famous DC Comics character Swamp Thing, but this is unlikely given that both debuted within a few months of one another.

But comic book fans, we tend to take the integrity of our universe very seriously, and the fact that there was one story in 1974 or whenever that showed -- that indicated -- you know, "incontroversibly" (sic) that this is the case when, in fact, it doesn't really prove anything.
Many of them have debated their beliefs in the comics - as you say, not the hardline way, but that is definitely not the same as saying that they are not Christian superheroes [or Jewish superheroes], or that they are not devoted.

Thing versus Namor was touched on briefly before the Thing/Cage thread died out, and even though King of Mars made a thread today, I still wanted to get into this one.
Thing is obviously one of the most respected guys in Marvel, and we were able to really establish the fact that he's one of the biggest hearts too.
Submariner is like an underwater Superman and all, but I think the Thing is a little bit stronger and the Submariner is a little more hot-headed that Ben and would lose his cool sooner.

Thompson, who played the greedy industrialist Schist, made a pretty good villain (didn't his corporate logo look kinda like a swastika?) Or at least I thought so until the scene where he and his son are sitting in their Hummer talking about the sheriff and how he's getting close to their secrets...Schist Jr.
I have not read the comic, so I can't compare the movie to it, but compared to the original, campy 1970's 'Swamp Thing' with Adrienne Barbeau, 'Man Thing' can't hold itself up on his cheesy, trunk-like legs.

In the ongoing series, the man in the muck was Alec Holland, a handsome young scientist, and his first mission in hideous, shambling post-life existence was to avenge the murder of his wife, done in by the same criminal outfit that put him in the swamp.
In 1982, Swamp Thing was adapted into a movie — not exactly a record-smashing box-office bonanza, but DC deemed it a big enough deal to warrant reviving the comic book.
Swamp Thing found out he was simply a conglomeration of vegetable matter that had absorbed the fading memories of a corpse left to rot in the bog.

Being familiar with the comics helped so I knew who Man-Thing was and where he came from, but this part of the plot was very poorly developed in the film.
Initially I was very upset with myself that I missed the beginning of the movie on the original airing day, so I figured what the heck, I'll watch what's left and catch the beginning of it later.
Man-Thing, of the Marvel comics, was a great story, full of action, violence and always there was the underlying 'pain' and pathos of the man that became the Man-Thing.

Now, Slave Labor has gotten the rights to put out a comics adaptation/extrapolation of the original screenplay, and this is the second chapter- I must have missed the first one, which is referenced in the recap in the inside front cover.
There was also that comic that had at least two stories, one a recounting of the Native American Lady of the Lake folktale and another about the fellow named Talos that because ruler of the universe, that I asked about on this here blog several months ago and stumped everybody.
At left is the cover of the comic that I touched upon briefly in one of them- #16, which featured that incredibly strange story about the 13th floor of a skyscraper and the weird-ass alien creatures that were making life miserable for everyone that had the misfortune to be stuck there, including our heroine.

He's not only a dismally commercial, unoriginal creation, but could serve as the poster child for mainstream comics' invariably asinine, immature, and reprehensible 'adultification' of their titles.
As I recall, that's a little roulette-wheel type thing on his chest, which could choose various methods of doom to dish out.

 The Swamp :: Home of Man-Thing
One of the first comics I can remember reading was Fear # 16, where the Man-Thing becomes involved in a dispute between a tribe of Native American Indians and some property developers who want to reclaim the swamp.
Since then I have picked up the occasional Man-Thing guest appearance and back issues of most of the Man-Thing comics, along with a few of the other Muck-Monster titles.
Man-Thing is a Marvel Comics (e-mail) character so all the MT material on this page is copyright to them, I am just using it to show my appreciation for the good work of their artists and writers, and encourage others to have a look at the book.

The film, directed by Brett Leonard and shot in Australia, last year, was originally targeted as a theatrical release, but instead will go straight to DVD on June 14, with its R-rated version.
Rodionoff: I'd describe it as a throwback horror flick, an homage to Frankenheimer's Prophecy and Legend of Boggy Creek.
Rodionoff: The Man-Thing mini-series comic did well, but I think the idea of more film or comic incarnations will depend on how the movie does.
