Thingol forgave the houses of Fingolfin and Finarfin, but decreed that henceforth that Quenya, the high tongue of Aman spoken by the Ñoldor, should never again be spoken in Beleriand.
Because of Thingol's decision, Sindarin became the principal language of the Elves in Middle-earth, and Quenya was rarely heard afterwards.
Thingol's heir was Dior, son of Beren and Lúthien.

Tolkien's fictional world of Middle-earth, Thingol was the Sindarin form of the surname of one of the kings of the Teleri.
The first mention of Thingol is when he travels from Cuivienen with Oromë; to see the land of Valinor.
Thingol and Melian become king and queen of the Teleri who stay in Beleriand, now called the Sindar.

After the arrival of the Noldorin exiles, the activity of Morgoth's forces increased and Thingol had Melian use her magic to create a girdle of bewilderment around their lands, so that nobody could enter without the king's permission.
It was passed down through the ages and even survived the Downfall of Númenor; the Númenórean nobles of the House of Elendil brought it to the Realms in Exile (Arnor and Gondor) and there it became an inherited language for the more respectable citizens.
The Peredhil, Elrond and Elros, were of Sindarin descent, as their mother Elwing was the daughter of Dior, the son of Lúthien, the daughter of Thingol and Melian.

Thingol assented and told Beleg to choose a sword to which Beleg choose Anglachel, the blade crafted by Ëol, ignoring Melian’s warning he took the sword and returned to Dimbar and his men, slaying the Orcs before setting out to find Turin yet again.

Celeborn was said to be the grandson of Thingol's brother Elmo.
The Dwarves slay Thingol and take the necklace with the Silmaril but are pursued and killed by Elves of Doriath.
Celeborn was said to be the great-nephew of King Thingol of Doriath and was referred to by the title Prince of Doriath.

Thingol may or may not have emerged from the Halls of Mandos.
For example, in Unfinished Tales Christopher Tolkien mentions "Thingol's brother Elmo -- a shadowy figure about whom nothing is told save that he was the younger brother of Elwe (Thingol) and Olwe, and was 'beloved of Elwe with whom he remained'." Elmo was presumed to be the grandfather of Celeborn through a son named Galadhon.
That is, Thingol had to have relatives, so that it would be clear he was not all alone in the woods.
