  NESBÚÐ
Thingvellir was the nation’s meeting place until 1798, or for 868 continuous years.
Thingvellir was often the scene of the Icelandic Sagas, most of which were written in the 13th century.
It is often said that Europe and America meet at Thingvellir, and this is not so far from the truth because the subsidence area has been formed where the tectonic plates of Europe and America are drifting apart.

After the Althing had agreed to adoption of the new religion, a messenger brought news of the outbreak a volcanic eruption in the Olfus district, and that lava was flowing towards the farm of Thoroddur, the speaker of the Althing and major proponent of the conversion.

 Iceland's Thingvellir
In 930 AD, while most of Europe was mired in feudalism and conflict, chieftains in Iceland gathered in a natural amphitheater to the north and west of Reykjavik and formed the world’s first parliament, the Althing.
The meeting place was called Thingvellir (“parliament plains”), and over the next 300 years representatives journeyed here once a year to elect leaders, argue cases, and settle disputes - sometimes peacefully, sometimes not.
Today, Thingvellir National Park remains the ultimate symbol of Iceland’s independence and unity, a landscape inseparable from the national soul.
