I think, as the some of the people do during the recent discussion of faceless-communication on the Pink Floyd list, that technology, if anything, removes physical barriers and while it is an alienation in a physical sense, it is not a particularly bad thing.
I've found Pink Floyd to be a group I could close my eyes and sway to when listening to their albums and this more true for their earlier albums than their later ones.
One would think this is an example of aging rockers cashing in on their earlier success and they would be correct, but still, it was hard to resist getting this once I saw the blinking light on the side of the CD cover.

Thinking about this number: The Floyd were many great things, but a blues band was not one of them.
I think the melancholy prog thing was done much better by Tony Banks when he wrote for Genesis up to "Me and Sarah Jane", but Pink Floyd was something entirely different and irreproducible (well, unless you happen to be Porcupine Tree.) Maybe they are the most successful example of "ambient rock".
Floyd from DSOTM on seems much more song oriented to me. That alone doesn't disqualify it, of course, but I need to hear some other elements within the song to make it interesting.

Also, the early Pink Floyd, under Syd's tutelage, was quintessentially English, in the same way that Ray Davies is. It wasn't your usual rock'n'roll, RandB stuff, which is very American-oriented.
