Topic: Thinking process

In the News (Tue 18 Nov 08)

Thought - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thought or thinking is a mental process which allows beings to model the world, and so to deal with it effectively according to their goals, plans, ends and desires.
Thinking is a higher cognitive function and the analysis of thinking processes is part of cognitive psychology.
Thinking can be modeled by a field (like a mathematical representation of an electro-magnetic field, but with each point in the field a point of consciousness).

 Thinking Process
Memory, self—awareness and thought processes are so complex that they are believed to require the involvement of the whole brain rather than one or two restricted regions.
The study of man’s mental processes remain very engrossing and many of the answers are so remote, that this itself is an indication of the phenomenal powers of the cerebrum, which is the seat of human consciousness and of all learning, speech, thought and recall.
Either process would involve changes at the synapses that is, at the points where impulses pass from one neuron (brain cell) to another.

 Indicator: Systems Thinking
Together, systems thinking and process reengineering ensure that every facet of the school system is focused and aligned toward the mission.
Systems thinking is the ability to see through the complexity of a structure, to analyze the interdependencies and the value of each component in light of the purpose.
Process reengineering is the redesigning of a system to streamline its components and their interdependency for the achievement of desired results.

 Hyponoetics - Glossary - [T]
Dialectics is the process of thought that proceeds by contradiction and the reconciliation of contradiction, the overall pattern being one of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis.
A person thinking transrationally is not thinking within the bounds of the capacity of the brain, as rational thinking does, but the secondary mind thinks as the primary mind, it is one with the primary mind and therefore uses the unrestrained power of primary thinking.
Universal Thinking is the thinking of the Universal Mind, and as such, synonymous to Primary Thinking and contrasted with Individual or Secondary Thinking.

BUSINESS PROCESS THINKING - Shift from Traditional Functional Mindset
Thinking in terms of processes compels a business to see itself and its work from the customer's perspective, rather than from its own.
This way of thinking stands in the way of executives understanding and improving the flow of cross-functional activities which create enduring value for customers and shareholders.
The wholehearted commitment to process and an abandonment of the thinking and practices inherent in functional organizations begins with focusing on twin principles – being organized and being together.

Kaizen Rapid Process | Lean Thinking | Lean and the Environment | EPA
Rapid continual improvement processes typically require an organization to foster a culture where employees are empowered to identify and solve problems.
Once a suitable production process, administrative process, or area in a factory is selected, a more specific "waste elimination" problem within that area is chosen for the focus of the kaizen event (i.e., the specific problem that needs improvement, such as lead time reduction, quality improvement, or production yield improvement).
For example, an organization might select a change in process chemistry that addresses one improvement need (e.g., product quality, process cycle time) but that might be sub-optimal if the organization considered the material hazards or toxicity and the associated chemical and hazardous waste management obligations.

In addition to the academic journal Process Studies, a popular vehicle for the dissemination of the theological application is Creative Transformation, the magazine of the Process and Faith Program.
Process interdisciplinary thought addresses issues outside the areas of academic philosophy and theology, for example in education, physics, ecology, economics, social theory, women's studies, and psychology.
In addition to the academic journal Process Studies, major vehicles of this application are the Conferences and Seminars of the Center for Process Studies, reported in its newsletter Process Perspectives, and the State University of New York (SUNY) Series in Constructive Postmodern Thought, edited by David Ray Griffin.

A Thinking World: About The Thinking Notebook
Thinking, writing, reflecting — these processes all work together to create the habit of thoughtfulness in you, a pattern of thinking that, once it gets established, will grow exponentially.
Finally, in order to actually learn to think through reading a book, it is necessary to become actively involved in the experience— thinking, articulating your ideas, evaluating the quality of your reasoning, and refining and improving your thinking process.
Whatever the notebook form, the key to success is developing the discipline and commitment to engage in the process, thinking deeply and expressing your ideas as clearly and specifically as possible.

This implies that creative thinking is a component of critical thinking rather than a separate, though related, thinking process with its own standards of excellence.
Critical thinking is a complex activity and we should not expect that one method of instruction will prove sufficient for developing each of its component parts.
Therefore, it is necessary to include development of creative thinking (e.g., lateral thinking)and practice in using both sets of competencies to solve problems and make decisions in a wide variety of situations.

STSC CrossTalk - Applying Systems Thinking to Process Improvement - Mar 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Process discipline and improvement (the perceived fix) is done for its own sake, and the consequence is that the organization's software/systems development performance gets worse (the unintended consequence).
But the implementation of processes and procedures that are nothing but a regurgitation of the CMMI in these environments results in burdening the organization with process overhead that does not add value, thus making the organization less effective and less efficient than they were without the CMMI.
In this systems archetype, the perceived problem is a lack of process or process discipline in the organization, or that the organization does not have a CMM or CMMI maturity level.

 Working Paper: Creativity Models
Arieti (1976) catalogued eight models of the creative thinking process that were proposed during the period 1908 to 1964.
Wertheimer (1945) assert that the process of creative thinking is a integrated line of thought that does not lend itself to the segmentation implied by the steps of a model.
In contrast to the prominent role that some models give to subconscious processes, Perkins (1981) argues that subconscious mental processes are behind all thinking and, therefore, play no extraordinary role in creative thinking.

Second, although it is closely related to the four-frame model, scientific method is more familiar to scientists, study-of-science scholars, educators, teachers, and students, so it may be easier to communicate ideas effectively if they are expressed in terms of scientific method, used by itself or in conjunction with the four frames of knowledge.
