Thiol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The thiol group is the sulfur analog of the hydroxyl group (-OH) found in alcohols.
Thiols bind strongly to skin proteins, and are responsible for the intolerable, persistent odor produced by feces, rotting flesh and the spraying of skunks.
Thiols are also responsible for a class of wine faults caused by an unintended reaction between sulfur and yeast.

In chemistry, thiols (formerly known as mercaptans) are those compounds which contain the sulfhydryl group -SH attached to a carbon atom.
Thiols are similar to alcohols, with the oxygen of the hydroxyl group -OH being replaced by a sulfur atom.
Thiols bind strongly to skin proteins, and are responsible for the intolerable, persistent odor produced by the spraying of skunks.

Polymer having thiol end group - Patent 4565854
A polymer having a thiol group at one end obtained by polymerizing at least one monomer capable of radical polymerization in contact with a thiolcarboxylic acid represented by the formula R--COSH wherein R is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group; and then treating the resulting polymer wtih an alkali or acid.
The polymer having a thiol group at one end as set forth in claim 1, wherein said monomer capable of radical polymerization is selected from the group consisting of a vinyl ester, a vinyl halide, an aromatic vinyl compound, an.alpha.-olefin, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylic ester, methacrylic ester, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile.
The special polymer composition of vinyl ester polymer having a thiol group at only one end thereof is utilized for polymerizing monomers capable of radical polymerization in the presence of the vinyl ester polymer to form a block copolymer in which the vinyl ester polymer constitutes one component.

Cys Thiol AA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Thiols ionize at about pH 8 and so usually they are protonated at biological pH.
In the presence of oxygen or oxidizing conditions, the 2 thiols react to form a disulfide bond between them.
Since this is a redox reaction, the hydride ion released by each thiol is usually coupled to an electron acceptor reaction or in simple oxidiation with oxygen, hydrogen peroxide is usually formed with further reduction to water.

 Using Thiol-Modified Oligos
Two types of reagents can be used to introduce a thiol group at the 5' end of an oligonucleotide: the 5'-Thiol-Modifier-C6 and the 5'-Thiol Modifier C6 S-S (Disulfide).
Modified oligos terminated with the 5'-Thiol-Modifier C6 are shipped with the trityl protecting group still attached to the sulfur.
In order to free the thiol group for use, remove the trityl group and reduce the sulfur.

Control of Cell Cycle Progression in Human Natural Killer Cells Through Redox Regulation of Expression and ...
Using thiol deprivation, we have previously shown that the response of natural killer (NK) cells to interleukin-2 (IL-2) is subject to redox regulation downstream of IL-2 binding and internalization.
The data suggest the possibility that the premature and prolonged enhancement of CDK activity in thiol-deprived NK cells is associated with, and therefore may contribute to, the reduced expression and phosphorylation of RB, and the associated cell cycle arrest.
Thiol depletion of NK3.3 cells reduced RB expression and greatly reduced or abrogated phosphorylation of RB in response to IL-2.
