  Thiotimoline
Thiotimoline is a fictitious chemical compound conceived by science fiction author Isaac Asimov and described in a spoof scientific paper entitled The Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotimoline in 1948.
In subsequent years Asimov wrote three sequels (The Micropsychiatric Applications of Thiotimoline, Thiotimoline and the Space Age and Thiotimoline to the Stars) though only the first of these matched the hoax article format of the original.
In one of these he expounded a putative rationale for thiotimoline's behaviour: namely that the chemical bonds in the compound's structural formula were so starved of space that some were forced into the time dimension.

 Thiotimoline Information
In Asimov's writing, thiotimoline is notable for the fact that when it is mixed with water, the chemical dissolves before it contacts the water.
This is explained by the fact that in the thiotimoline molecule, there is at least one carbon atom such that, while two of the carbon's four chemical bonds lie in normal space and time, one of the bonds projects into the future and another into the past.
The story of the genesis of this spoof was one of Asimov's favourite personal anecdotes and he retold it a number of times in print.

Thiotimoline has the property that it dissolves 1.12 seconds before the introduction of a solvent.
When the thiotimoline dissolves, 1.12 seconds before the addition of water, the formerly opaque thiotimoline becomes transparent and the photoelectric cell is tripped.
The thiotimoline in the second test tube will, of course, dissolve 2.24 seconds before water was added to the first tube.

The most common use of thiotimoline's endochronic properties is in the construction of "telechronic batteries." The principle behind the telechronic battery is easy to understand and home experimenters will have no trouble constructing their own.

Thiotimoline is a fictitious chemical compound conceived by science fiction author Isaac Asimov and first described in a spoof scientific paper entitled "The Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotimoline" in 1948.
Thiotimoline is derived from the bark of the shrub Rosacea Karlsbadensis rufo, and the thiotimoline molecule includes at least fourteen hydroxy groups, two amino groups, and one sulfonic acid group, and possibly one nitro compound group as well.
Vernon\'s speech explains that thiotimoline was first mentioned in 1948 by a semi-mythical scientist named Azimuth or Asymptote, but that serious study of the compound didn\'t begin until the 21st century scientist Almirante worked out the theory of hypersteric hindrance.

Thiotimoline has been used (mostly unsuccessfully) in military, space travel, and communications applications, but the AnTicipator is its only known application in the creative arts.
Using "bucket brigade" devices made from real buckets – i.e., a tiny series of 16 water pails inside the unit attached to a small motorized cam, which continuously dumps the contents of each one into the next – pre-delays of up to 18 seconds can be produced.

I seem to recall that it was in response to a question from the floor about the thiotimoline article, but anyway he talked about the article and made the statement about Campbell's "steel-trap mind" (it may have been that Campbell had "the original steel-trap mind").
It would be unlikely that one of his examiners would have asked the question at the very beginning, since, so I am told, thesis examiners go for the fierce in their questions.
Given this kind of questioning, it is unlikely that the examiners would have mentioned thiotimoline until the end of the session.

The "endochronic" property of thiotimoline (pronounced "thigh-o-TIME-o-line") was its ability to dissolve in water a split-second BEFORE the water was added.

Thiotimoline is an odd molecule, the simplest example of a class of endochronic substances in which one chemical bond is so pressurized that it is distorted through the temporal dimension into the future.
This warped bond is what gives thiotimoline the property, first described in 1948 by graduate student I. imuth, of dissolving 1.12 seconds before being added to water.
Thiotimoline temporally "smears" the T3 molecule into the future, causing it to remain active in the body after it has already broken down.

The idea underlying the speech is that by piling up successive automatic thiotimoline cells, you can create a device which will dissolve an arbitrary time before water is added.
