Third Avenue is a north-south thoroughfare on the East Side of the New York City borough of Manhattan, running from East 4th Street north for over 120 blocks.
Third Avenue continues into The Bronx across the Harlem River over the Third Avenue Bridge north of East 129th Street to West Fordham Road at Fordham Center.
Third Avenue carries only northbound (uptown) traffic north of 24th Street, south of which it is two-way, and again reprises this role in The Bronx.

While the Third Avenue Bridge stood about one-half mile north along Harlem River, the bridge, which was reconstructed in the 1890's, was already reaching capacity.
As the bridge was being constructed, alterations were made to the original plans for incandescent lights, increased boiler and dynamo power (using electric rather than steam power), four pedestrian shelters on rest piers, an improved end-lift system, and the use of cement instead of asphalt on the roadway and sidewalks.

Third Avenue, a New York City-based investment firm,  made its unsolicited bid for up to 39 million shares of Catalyst on Aug. 11.
Keith Purchase, Catalyst's chairman, also said the company has concerns about the "coercive nature of the (Third Avenue) bid, and the fact that they have failed to provide a clear indication of their plans for the company should they gain control."
"We respect Third Avenue's reputation as a deep value investor and share their view that Catalyst is significantly undervalued," Purchase said in a release.
