 State socialism
Socialism can be defined as a form of social organisation in which ownership and control of the means of production (farms, factories, etc.) is in the hands of the community as a whole.
Third and perhaps most important in the militarising of state socialism has been the squeezing of socialism into a state mould.
The statist left is uncritical of state socialism in part as a reaction to the anticommunism of the right, and the right's use of the state socialist bogy as a means for attacking the more moderate aims of the statist left for state intervention.

A concentration camp is a large detention center created for political opponents, aliens, specific ethnic or religious groups, civilians of a critical war-zone, or other groups of people, often during a war.
Although these camps were not intended to be extermination camps, and there was absolutely no official policy to kill people, some Indians were raped and/or murdered by US soldiers.
During the early part of the colonial period, such camps were used mostly to forcably remove Arabs, Berbers and Turks from the fertile areas of land and settle primarlily French, Spanish and Maltese settlers.

The Third Camp, by contrast, understood that as the economic power of the Stalinist ruling class resided in its political monopoly, then "even such measures of popular political control as are possible under capitalism" were impossible as these would disintegrate the economic power of the ruling class.
Socialism from below, he argued, was limited to a handful of figures such as the founders Karl Marx, the "democratic extremist," and Friedrich Engels, William Morris, Rosa Luxemburg, Eugene Debs, and, until the counter-revolution, the Bolshevik tradition.
The Third Camp during the Cold War indicted the A-Bomb as the enemy of the anti- Stalinist revolt and posed a democratic foreign policy and political warfare as the alternative.

This position is broadly held by the Workers' Liberty grouping in Australia and the United Kingdom, and by the International Socialist wing of Solidarity in the United States.
Social democratic Shachtmanism, called "Right Shachtmanism" by detractors, later developed by Shachtman and espoused by the Social Democrats USA holds Stalinist nations to be worse than Western capitalism, and will as a result often side with the U.S. government in international conflicts against Stalinist groups, such as the Vietnam War.

Iraq and the Third Camp   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The contemporary meaning of third camp socialism is the refusal to be enlisted into some new "Great Contest" as cheerleader or critical supporter of either reactionary camp, and the elaboration of a positive and practical political alternative to both.
In any case, if the progressive forces of the third camp are to push them aside, and reconnect with Muslim workers and diverse progressive elements in society who experience the fundamentalists as their mortal foe, then we must first define them correctly as a deadly enemy not a potential ally.
Nonetheless the underlying trend is clear: the growth in social weight and political assertiveness of the working class is the greatest global force for democratization and for a "third camp" politics able to oppose the other two reactionary contenders.

It is not a good thing, he warned, that under modern capitalism effective control over investment, credit and social planning is increasingly vested in the hands of unelected elites that hold their own class interests and which valorize their own class-determined notions of the public good.
