Menzies was renowned as a brilliant speaker, both on the floor of Parliament and on the hustings.
Menzies was born in Jeparit, a small town in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, the son of a storekeeper and state Member of Parliament of Scottish descent.
Menzies was first educated at a one-room school, then later at private schools in Ballarat and Melbourne, before studying law at the University of Melbourne.

Menzies was the first Prime Minister to see the desirability of making it possible for Canberra to be developed from a town of less than 10 000 public servants, to the status of a National Capital of world class.

Internal documents, said the report, "incorrectly indicated that the [Iraqi] ministry of defence signed contracts with Poland, Arab countries, the United States and Europe, but we discovered that all contracts were signed and executed with Iraqi suppliers".
Nine ministry officials, all of them appointed by the US, have been fired by the ministry, and face possible criminal charges.

 Britain and US step up bombing in Iraq
The total amount of bombs dropped by British and American aircraft on targets in southern Iraq has increased dramatically over the past few months, in a clear indication that the no-fly zone is being used to destroy the country's air defence systems in anticipation of an all-out attack.
Ordnance dropped on southern Iraq in response to threats has increased by 300% since March this year, according to figures released by the Ministry of Defence today in response to questions from the Liberal Democrat spokesman on foreign affairs, Menzies Campbell.
For every threat detected in April and May 2002, about one third of a tonne of bombs was dropped on Iraq; between September and November, every threat was met with an average of 1.3 tonnes.

In a speech in the Reichstag, Chancellor Adolf Hitler officially renounced the Anglo-German Naval Treaty of 1935, which had restricted the German navy to one-third the size of the Royal Navy, as well as the German-Polish Non-Aggression Pact of 1934, accusing the British and Polish governments of attempting to "encircle" Germany.
Under the terms of the agreement, both the German and Soviet governments promised not to attack the other, but also called for their neutrality in the event that the other was attacked by a third power.
The two signatories also promised not to join any group of countries "which is directly or indirectly aimed at the other party." In the secret provisions of the agreement, the Germans and Soviets divided up their territorial aspirations in Poland, Romania, and the Baltic countries.
