Michigan State Capitol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first state capitol was located in Detroit, the original capital of Michigan, and was relocated to Lansing in 1847, due to the need to develop the western portions of the state and for easy defense from British troops stationed in Windsor, Ontario.
The first building to serve as the state capitol was built in 1832 to serve as the "territorial courthouse." This brick structure was one of the earliest Greek revival buildings in Michigan, with a portico of Ionic columns and a central tower of 140 feet (42 m).
On March 31, 1871, a bill was adopted "for the erection of a new state capitol, and a building for the temporary use of the state officers." The new capitol was to cost $1.2 million, to be raised by a six-year state income tax.

USA-Presidents.Info - Gerald Ford Third State of the Union Address
For my part I pray the third century we are beginning will bring to all Americans, our children and their children's children, a greater measure of individual equality, opportunity, and justice, a greater abundance of spiritual and material blessings, and a higher quality of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The state of the Union is a measurement of the many elements of which it is composed--a political union of diverse States, an economic union of varying interests, an intellectual union of common convictions, and a moral union of immutable ideals.
May our third century be illuminated by liberty and blessed with brotherhood, so that we and all who come after us may be the humble servants of thy peace.

Courtney: Tocqueville's Third State of Mind
To sum up, Tocqueville's theory of three states of intellect has taught us (1) that dogmatic beliefs will almost certainly be called into question and (2) that once doubt has been introduced, people are likely to cling to a diminished version of their original position unless something clearly more convincing is available.
This second state leads to "a narrow and unenlightened selfishness" for the people "are emancipated from prejudice without having acknowledged the empire of reason" (I:242-3).
This third state is more praiseworthy because the affirming dynamism shared with the first state is coupled with rational insight capable of responding to problems and dealing with doubts.

JS Online: State was third in turnout
The only two states that exceeded Wisconsin's turnout of 66% of voting age adults were Minnesota (68.7%) and Maine (66.7%).
The explanation for that probably lies in the state's "battleground" status, which brought unprecedented attention in the form of campaign ads, candidate visits and media coverage.
The figures also show that whether a state is contested or not remains a much smaller factor in turnout than its political culture and traditions.
