Time, Space and Third Man Running - NASL Drills - Best source for soccer coaches in the world   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-22)
The concept of third man running, simply put, is an offensive group tactic used during a game to either create space or to create a situation where the ball can be played to a team mate who makes an unsuspected run during a game.
Third man running always works best if the runner makes a diagonal or curved run because there will be more passing points available to the passer during this type of a run as opposed to a vertical or horizontal run.
The third person running may not be the player that turns out to be the receiver in a play but that person, at the very least, can create space for an opportunistic teammate to exploit.

Other than one discussion between a second or third mate and a union representative from one of the unlicensed seamen's unions regarding whether the collective-bargaining agreement governed the problem (it did not), however, the record does not contain any evidence that a grievance was ever filed with a second or third mate.
Thus, although the unlicensed seamen's contracts require as a first step the presentation of the grievance to the watch officer (second or third mate), the evidence supports the conclusion that the parties have not followed this procedure, and that, in fact, the grievance is apparently first presented either to the master or the chief mate.

In the Scholar's Mate, Black's development of his or her King's Bishop to b5 or alternatively development of his or her Queen's Knight to c6, whichever occurred as Black's third move, was not effective development.
In the third, White was able to checkmate with just a pawn advance and three moves by two different pieces (one move by the Bishop, and two moves by the Queen).
This principle obviously is not true for Black in the two-move checkmate (Fool's Mate) situation because Black must make the requisite pawn advance using the King's pawn in order for Black to have any chance to effectuate checkmate with Black's Queen move on his or her second move.
