Topic: Third political party

Third party (politics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For instance, in the United Kingdom a third party is a national political party other than the Conservatives and Labour which has a substantial presence in the House of Commons.
The term "third parties" is used in countries with first past the post electoral systems as these systems tend to create a two-party system; meaning successful smaller parties are rare.
In U.S. politics, for instance, a third party is a political party other than the Democrats or Republicans that also has national influence.

Third parties in the United States are secondary political parties that participate in national and state elections.
Also a third party may be used by the voter to cast a protest vote as if in a referendum on an important issue.
And since the new party rarely seems to have the chance or prospect of electing its candidate for governor of a state or president of the country, the voter is inclined in advance to consider its entire ticket as hopeless.

 The Case Against Third Parties
The Constitution Party argues that it will push needed reforms that the Republicans won't, but they'll do what the Republican party is able to do by getting most principled members of the GOP to their cause.
The idea that politicians of both parties are hopelessly corrupt and the only hope for the country is for a particular third party to claim victory is gloomy.
When that third party finished with less than half a percent or less than a tenth of a percent of the vote, it becomes downright demoralizing that 97% of Americans are voting for hopelessly corrupt major parties.

When a third party candidate reaches a certain level of visibility and seriousness, public skepticism evaporates and we have a new political arena one with a fresh and honest voice, speaking to clearly stated concerns of voters and would-be voters.

The Communist Party itself helped secure Roosevelt’s re-election that year, and by 1938, party publications abandoned the idea of forming a third political party in the U.S., arguing for "operating insofar as electoral activity is concerned, chiefly through the Democratic Party."
Perhaps the most disastrous effect of Democratic Party politics on the U.S. left is that it allows the left’s collective memory to stretch no further back than the last election, so political lessons such as those from the 1930s have been lost on current generations.

The problem is that the parties in Washington, and the people on the ground in America, are polarized.
There is an increasing and profound distance between the rulers of both parties and the people--between the elites and the grunts, between those in power and those who put them there.
But a new group or entity that could define the problem correctly--that sees the big divide not as something between the parties but between America's ruling elite and its people--would be making long strides in putting third party ideas in play in America again.
