		Thirroul is a suburb in the Wollongong Local Government Area.
		Thirroul, known as Robbinsville until 1895, is situated on the Illawarra South Coast between Austinmer and Bulli approximately 13 kilometres north of Wollongong.
		Thirroul lies between the Pacific Ocean and a section of the Illawarra escarpment known as Lady Fuller Park.

	Walkabout - Thirroul
		Thirroul has long been a beach resort although its proximity to industrialised Wollongong meant that it was largely ignored until the arrival of the electric train service in 1987.
		Thirroul's greatest claim to historical fame was the residence, from May to August 1922, of the novelist D.H. Lawrence at 3 Craig St. This pleasant house, a Californian-style bungalow with very strong Australian Federation overtones, is still named 'Wyewurk'.
		Thirroul's other dubious claim to fame is that the famous twentieth-century Australian painter Brett Whiteley died at the Oral Eagle Motel (now the Thirroul Beach Motel) in 1992.

		Daphne Hicks said her mum operated Hills Buses in unison with her father at the Thirroul garage.
		Jim (pictured left with wife hyacinth) opened the brick garage in the early 1930s which traded from the site until the mid 1990s when it was demolished to make for a string of shops.
		Hyacinth’s daughter, 76-year-old Daphne Hicks of Woonona said her mum and brother operated the bus company in unison with her father at the Thirroul garage.

		Our destination was the DH Lawrence Reserve in Craig Street, Thirroul, a beautiful little leafy park overlooking the same beach that Lawrence did from "Wyewurk" at Number 3 Craig Street, only two houses away, where he wrote Kangaroo in May-June 1922.
		We had decided this year to invite members and the public to a "Sizzling event with DHL" and prepared for it with barbecue equipment, sausages, onions, rolls and red wine, plus a photocopy of Lawrence's holograph of Kangaroo, and a photographic display to be mounted in the Reserve.
		Thirroul had finally embraced its DHL heritage and after John's years of toil on the hard stony ground there, the Society was asked to participate in several Community events.
