In June 1991, Mount Pinatubo buried Clark in volcanic ash and forced the closure of the base on Nov 26, Thirteenth Air Force relocated to Andersen and officially established its headquarters on Guam on December 2, 1991.
Thirteenth Air Force is responsible to Pacific Air Forces to plan, execute and control aerospace operations throughout the Southwest Pacific and Indian Ocean area of responsibility.
Thirteenth Air Force provides the commander-in-chief, Pacific Command, a combat ready, deployable staff to direct joint coalition contingency operations, ensures assigned combat forces are effectively employed and logistically supported, and supports U.S. policies and interests by maintaining military-to-military relationships with regional partners.

Following World War II this air force was involved in air defense and reserve training and concentrated entirely upon air defense in the latter 1960s and again after 1985.

The Fifth Air Force (5AF), with headquarters currently located at Yokota Air Base, Japan, is one of very few numbered air forces of the United States Air Force never to have been based in the United States itself.
In August 1942, under the command of Major General George Kenney, the new Fifth Air Force was organized as a component of the FEAF, with headquarters in Brisbane, Australia.
The 5AF, along with the Thirteenth Air Force (the other main combat command of the FEAF) devastated Japan's air, land, and sea forces in the South West Pacific Area for the remainder of World War II.

In mid-January 1943, the headquarters of the Thirteenth Air Force was established at Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides islands.
The air forces’ requests for small, mobile hospitals were partly satisfied starting in 1943 when the Army theater SOS agreed to attach several of its “portable surgical hospitals” to the operational control of the Fifth Air Force.
The Thirteenth Air Force began to use such facilities in late 1944 when it had to close some of its group infirmaries temporarily.

For more than two weeks prior to the landings, Thirteenth Air Force Liberators, based on Los Negros, had been pounding Truk to neutalize the strategic Japanese base and to prevent the enemy from reinforcing Saipan by air.
A large Japanese task force, estimated at 40 ships or more, was sighted some distance north of Yap Island, on the 19th of June 1944.
Liberators of the THirteenth Air Force were called upon to reach out more than 1,000 statute miles from their Los Negros base to hit Japanese warships that might seel refuge or fuel in Yap Harbor.
