All-Reviews.com Movie/Video Review: The Thirteenth Floor
Although "The Thirteenth Floor" has acquired a similar storyline concerning alternate realities and virtual technology, the style in which the subject matter is approached relies more on '30s film noir than action or fantasy (even though it has a little bit of both).

The Audio Revolution Review of 'The Thirteenth Floor'
However, ‘The Thirteenth Floor’ is hugely handicapped by appearing on the scene after ‘The Matrix.’ Viewers who saw the earlier release may note that the plot of the new film could be folded whole into its predecessor’s universe (even as they long for ‘The Matrix’’s headlong pace).
What’s especially vexing about ‘The Thirteenth Floor’ is that, although its narrative threads eventually tie together, it doesn’t appear to have been philosophically explored by its makers.
There are some great optical and aural effects in ‘The Thirteenth Floor,’ with a nice distinction made (it’s even commented on in the dialogue) between the glittering, saturated colors of 1999 Los Angeles and the muted tones of the 1937 city.

Movie Review - Thirteenth Floor, The - Hollywood Bitchslap   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The Thirteenth Floor has the unfortunate timing to follow closely in the footsteps of the box office smash "The Matrix", starring Keanu Reeves and last year's successful film "Dark City" - it has not avoided the critical comparison.
As the movie slowly (I stress slowly) progresses he begins to unravel the mystery behind his boss's death, the unexpected arrival of Fuller's daughter, (Gretchen Mol - Rounders, Music from Another Room), and the real truth behind the world they created in 1937 as well as the present world.
The Thirteenth Floor lacks the effects and action of "The Matrix" or the quirky, bizarre nature of "Dark City", yet these could have been overlooked if they were replaced by stellar acting, or an original and engaging plot.

But for all its complexities, "The Thirteenth Floor" is little more than flimsy made-for-cable fare catapulted into theaters on the boffo box office merits of its producer, Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day," "Godzilla").

There used to be an old drinking game where you'd pop the Al Pacino version of Scarface into the VCR and do a shot every time his character said the "F" word.
