Thirty Seconds over Tokyo (1944) Movie Overview ~ Cast and Crew, Trailer, Pictures, Synopsis, Release Date - ...
There is no more ringing title among World War II movies than Thirty Seconds over Tokyo, and the mission it celebrates was unquestionably historic: a 400-mile bombing raid to carry the war to Japan itself mere months after that nation's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.
Lawson's bestselling memoir (with Bob Considine) of his training for the secret mission, his group's launching from the aircraft carrier Hornet, and his crash landing and protracted ordeal in China--where he lost a leg--has been faithfully served.
The film is long on homely detail and all-American decency (including a remarkably outspoken regret over the unavoidability of civilian casualties) but achieves its greatest impact in the raid itself.

 Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo
By the beginning of April 1942, as the Japanese were completing their conquest of the Philippines, US forces were ready to launch a raid on Tokyo.
A total of sixteen B-25 bombers were to be placed on the flight deck of the USS Hornet which would then approach to within 500 miles of Tokyo.
A path-finding bomber would be launched several hours before the rest of the aircraft (in the late afternoon) and it would drop incendiaries on the intended targets in Tokyo (near dusk), to illuminate the objectives for the other bombers which were intended to arrive after dark.

Maverick, it seems, is tortured by self-doubt resulting from unfounded rumors that his old-man, a Navy pilot who died under mysterious circumstances during the war in Vietnam, did not have the 'right-stuff'.
Although it did little damage, the raid, which was the brainchild of the legendary Lieutenant-Colonel 'Jimmy' Doolittle, had great propaganda value, for it showed the Japanese that their nation was not, as they had imagined, safe from aerial bombardment.
They are visible, in silhouette, for just a few seconds, but, judging from the shape of their wings, they appear to be British-Electric Lightenings (affectionately known as 'flying file-cabinets').

After the Tokyo raid, he rose to command the 8th Air Force, the only reservist to command a numbered air force in the war.
The film Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo was based on the autobiography, and shown through the perspective, of Captain Ted W. Lawson (played in the film by Van Johnson), an aircraft commander during the Doolittle Raid who lost a leg when his B-25 crashed in China.
Although the film dwelt heavily on Lawson's relationship with his wife, Spencer Tracy's Doolittle was a major character in the film and it did cover the preparations, raid and aftermath with as much detail and accuracy as could be given considering that the war was still going on at the time.
