March 13: A major crack has developed on the historic 150-year-old main bridge across the Cauvery at Thiruvaiyaru district of Tamil Nadu following which vehicular traffic on the Thanjavur-Thiruvaiyaru Road on the state Highway has been stopped.
According to sources, the nine-metre long crack was found on the straight in the centre of the bridge above the sixth span of the river.
Work on the new bridge, to be constructed near the existing bridge, is under way and it is expected to be completed by August next, the sources said.
