  The Hindu : Kerala / Kannur News : Month-long Kunnathurpadi festival begins
The Thiruvappana festival of the Devasthanam began at Kunnathurpadi on Saturday.
During Thiruvappana, the performer dressed in elaborate costumes and headgear dances to the accompaniment of drumbeats.
While Thiruvappana represents Muthappan, the Vellattam Theyyam represents Payyavoorappan who is believed to have guarded Muthappan during his wanderings.

Sree Muthappan is believed to be the personification of two divine figures - Thiruvappana and Vellatom.
Fundamentally the dual divine figures Thiruvappana and vellatom are not very defferent from the Theyyamkaliyattem of north Malabar.
Though Sree Muthappan represents a single god, it represents two godly figures, Vishnu (with fish shaped crown) and Shiva (a crecsent shaped crown).

Every day Thiruvappana and Vellattam are performed in the early morning and in the evening.
Puthari Thiruvappana or "the first Thiruvappana of the year, puthari means the ceremonial feast from the new crop" is on Vrichikam 16th.
The last Thiruvappana is on Kanni 30th every year.

The entire expenditure is met from the contributions from devotees.
From time immemorial, charges for various poojas have been the same, the lowest being 75 paise for child feeding (sweet payasam, and of course, no toddy!) and Rs 13.25 for Thiruvappana, a person puts on the attire of Muthappan and dances in front of a lamp standing on the metal platform.
“Vellattam”- one type of dance is also performed inside the temple along with Thiruvappana.
