This Side of Paradise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This Side of Paradise is the debut novel of F.
Widely considered to be one of Fitzgerald's weaker works because of his relative inexperience and youth at the time of writing, This Side of Paradise is nonetheless a work of great literary merit.
For many years he hovered in the background of his family's life, an unassertive figure with a face half-obliterated by lifeless, silky hair, continually occupied in "taking care" of his wife, continually harassed by the idea that he didn't and couldn't understand her.

But I think the at times irregularity of This Side of Paradise makes it that much better- the book is as real as it's subject.
I read This Side of Paradise 2 years ago and found it absolutely amazing, though it does not capture the Roaring Twenties as Gatsby does.
I'd have to say This Side of Paradise was a tough read for myself, not because of the wording, but because it was so dry and boring.

'This side' is a great slice of history and F Scott displays his many writing gifts throughout. That 'This side' doesnt quite run smoothly or consistently is,I admit, a trivial criticism.F Scott was just 23 when this was published and helped change the style of the novel.
"this side of paradise" should be read along those lines, not along the lines of "serious" or "polished" or "formal," because it's none of those things.

 This Side of Paradise
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise describes life at Princeton among the glittering, bored, and disillusioned the post World War I lost generation.
The story of Amory Blaine's adolescence and undergraduate days at Princeton, This Side of Paradise captures the essence of an American generation struggling to define itself in the aftermath of World War I and the destruction of "the old order." A pastiche of literary styles, this dazzling chronicle of youth remains relevant even today.
This Side of Paradise, F. Scott Fitzgerald's romantic and witty first novel, was written when the author was only twenty-three years old.

Beatitude was met by a collective shrug from the record-buying public, and perhaps that's why This Side of Paradise follows a very commercial path indeed.
In 1980, he described his musical mission thusly: "I'm a test pilot for mass hysteria." By simplifying the Cars' winning, quirky formulas to a radio-correct equation in 1986, Ocasek's become another bombardier for mass hypnosis.

This Side of Paradise Summary & Essays - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald sold his first major short stories while waiting for the printing, but This Side of Paradise was his major debut, an immediate success that marked both the dawn of the Jazz Age and the dawn of Fitzgerald’s turbulent career.
An insider’s satire of the American aristocracy and the social hierarchy of Ivy League universities, the novel turned Fitzgerald into a daring symbol for the Jazz Age, caused a sensation in the older generation, and inspired many in the younger generation to rush out and buy a copy.
Widely criticized as a haphazard collection of short stories that fail to cohere as a whole, This Side of Paradise does reveal some naivety in its young author, but its unique structure is also a vital part of what makes it a challenging and innovative text.

But then, at the end, Kirk's speech on how man isn't meant to live in paradise veers off into some weirdness about how humans have to fight and claw their way up, and the whole episode gets cast in rather uncomfortable light as a result.
It is, of course, entirely possible that I am overthinking the meaning of the episode, for much of "This Side of Paradise" is an entertaining lark.
It's entertaining to watch their giddy smiles, and even more amusing in contrast to a scowling, stomping Kirk whose crewman cheerfully agrees with him when he announces that the man's desertion is mutiny.
