Katlehong is a township located 35 Km east of Johannesburg and south of Germiston between two other townships of Thokoza and Vosloorus next to the N3 highway in the Ekhuruleni metropolitan of Gauteng Province of South Africa.
Katlehong was established in 1945 and has become a high density area in the Gauteng with 6 informal settlements in the southern part of Katlehong.
Together with Thokoza it forms the second biggest fl township after Soweto.

I was part of a group that was based inside the old Thokoza Hall and there were members of IFP who were inside the stadium and I could see that on the background the military cars which are moving with them and I did participate in shooting.
We talk of Thokoza and we are not inside Thokoza and I'm aware that you people have the background of what happened but I'm quite sure you people, maybe some of you have never been even inside Thokoza so I thought maybe it would be better if I bring in Thokoza inside this story.
We have two sections there, Thokoza Garden on top and Beirut underneath and the funeral procession was stopped right at the middle of those two sections, it's where the attack took place and as I said earlier that was the last funeral procession that went through the street.

Unlike the Thokoza Monument, the idea of a monument in Katlehong was initiated by the leaders of the two dominant political parties: the ANC and the IFP.
For instance in Thokoza, Mojapelo mentioned that during the initial stage of the monument, the former conflicting groups, the SDUs and SPUs seemed to have a problem when the names of their victims were to be mixed on one monument.
There was another example in Thokoza, one mother who submitted the names of her two children that had been killed to the monument list, stated that, though it was important for her to remember her children through the monument, their deaths had left her without anyone to assist with paying basic expenses like rent.

Johannesburg - East Rand police are investigating the possibility that a serial rapist is on the loose in Thokoza after three recent incidents where similarities have been identified in the modus operandi and description of the rapist.
In the most recent incident on May 15, a 20-year-old woman from Katlehong was raped in a mielie field in Brackendowns after meeting up with a man who had earlier promised her a job, police spokesperson Superintendent Andy Pieke said on Thursday.
The description of the rapist and his modus operandi was similar to those given by the victims in at attack on a 28-year-old woman in March and one on a 23-year-old woman in April, Pieke said.
