Tholian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tholian home nation is the Tholian Assembly, which inhabits an area of space in the Alpha Quadrant, in close proximity to the Klingon Empire and the Badlands.
The Tholian Assembly is located rimward of the Cardassian Union and the Breen Confederacy, and the homeworld of Tholia is a Class Y planet, similar to the planet Venus.
The Tholian Holdfast (the Tholian Assembly in the SFU is the Holdfast's governing body) comprises a small number of worlds in former Klingon space, bordering the Klingon Empire, Romulan Star Empire, and Federation.

The Tholian Will   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The Tholian naval commanders were the spiritual (and literal) descendants of the provincial police forces of their former galaxy, not the Navy, and feared that the "real navy" officers of the arriving ships would insist on promoting themselves to command every vessel in the fleet.
The Tholian Will (that term meaning the overall purview of Tholian laws that were imposed on the inhabited systems of their galaxy) was enforced by a widespread and large fleet.
Tholians (and Seltorians) in the original Tholian Home Galaxy are NOT under the "Early Years" technology restrictions to be seen in Module Y. The Tholians who arrived in our galaxy had lost some technology (partly reducing them to the Early Years level) and gained it back over the years.

The Tholian government, known collectively as the Holdfast, is rumoured to be based on a planet called Tholia, though rumours of a Dyson Sphere at the centre of their space are popular.
Tholians live in a male-dominated society (this is from conditioning or natural tendencies; no laws pertaining to male superiority are known to exist) in complete service of the state; whether it be in military, political or civilian pursuits.
All Tholian males serve in the military for a mandatory 4-year stint upon turning 20 Terran Standard years; females are allowed to serve, but are not required to do so unless a state of war is in effect.

When the Tholians first arrived in our galaxy around 2179 this was the only hull that their one shipyard was capable of building, which was considered a police frigate in their home galaxy.
As with all of the "welded" PC designs though, none were able to venture outside of the Holdfast until the arrival of the "312th" battle fleet after 2278 with their advanced ship construction technologies.
While the Tholians never used any type of combat attrition unit in their home galaxy, the constant pressure from the Klingons and their limited fleet, made them very valuable to the Holdfast.

With good reason, the Tholians jealously guard their one advantage, and as a condition of treaties with the Federation, Romulans, Klingons and Gorns, have extracted a promise based upon the Cloaking Treaties between the Federation and Romulans, except with regard to web technology.
It is possible that these estimates are inaccurate, as it is unknown the number of shipyards the Tholians possess, and the number of ships needed to protect their territory is proportionally smaller than that needed by the Federation.
The Tholians are not known for destroying ships, in most cases they disable their opponent and then force the crew to abandon ship.

The Tholians found that their basic cruiser, which used four of the small PC warp engines, and had proved adequate for repelling the occasional Klingon raids.
The Tholians encountered a host of problems trying to "shoehorn" the large warp engines (these were actually 6 of the small PC engines mounted in 2 banks of 3 engines each) in the CA hull, and it appears these problems forced the cancellation of further conversions.

Despite facing the superior firepower possessed by the Gorn Navy, the Tholians were able to defend their new conquests, using their superior mobility and superior numbers to basically surround and capture/destroy lumbering Gorn starships which are not known for their manoeuverability.
Both the Tholian Holdfast and the Gorn Hegemony have since asked for the Federation to mediate the conflict.

The Tholians were fiercely neutral, despite several minor Coalition attacks on their borders, and would in effect move the edge of the galaxy closer to the Federation start lines.
In a desperate panic, the Tholians allowed Gorn and Kzinti squadrons to enter their space and participate in the defense against the Klingon (and to a lesser extent Romulan) onslaught.
This move by the Tholians was not popular in the Federation Council, but as no formal treaty had been signed, the Federation could not in fact "prove" that any such agreement existed.
