Thom Bell was among the principal architects of the lush and seductive Philly soul sound, one of the most popular and influential musical developments of the 1970s.
Born in Philadelphia in 1941, Bell studied classical piano as a youth; he joined Gamble's harmony group the Romeos in 1959, and by the age of 19 was working as a conductor and arranger for hometown hero Chubby Checker.
Bell's work with the Delfonics became immediately recognizable for its shimmering beauty and exquisite sweetness, and when he reunited with Gamble and new partner Leon Huff at their newly formed Philadelphia International Records, the classic Philly Soul sound quickly began to take shape.

Thom Bell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thom Bell was the record producer behind much of the Philadelphia soul subgenre of soul music in the 1970s.
Bell’s first big break in soul music came with Cameo Records in Philadelphia in 1967, where he was introduced to a local group called the Delfonics.
Bell revitalised the group, producing five albums including chart successes such as "Ghetto Child" and "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love?" An album followed with Dionne Warwick: Track of the Cat, in 1976, but his work was beginning to lose its originality.

The rest of the songs were from Thom Bell and his various collaborators including his nephew, Leroy Bell.
I love the vast majority of Thom Bell's work, and considering that it was Elton's first project in which he was mostly just being a singer and not creating the music from his genius, I can't help but think that was the real reason the project was shelved.
It is interesting to note that even though the credits claim the CD has the January 1979 remix of the material, I believe it is the original Thom Bell mixes as "Are You Ready For Love" is a full duet with The Spinners.

Thom Bell and became a Philly Soul act, making heavy use of strings, slow tempos, and celebratory love themes.
Song for song, I prefer Bell's other main act, The Stylistics, but this group gets points for endurance and versatility: a couple of songs per album were sung by other Spinners, giving you a break from the falsetto.
Bell did write the huge hit that put the group on the map, "I'll Be Around," and the clumsy message tune "Ghetto Child"; there's also one remake, the Wilson Pickett hit "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You," done incongrously as big band jazz.

Produced, conducted, arranged and largely written by Thom Bell (with Linda Creed getting co-writing credits on most of the ten tracks), the group's sophomore set proved a creative and commercial blockbuster.
With long standing producer Thom Bell no longer working with the group, Hugo Creatore and Luigi Peretti were brought in as replacements, with Van McCoy handling arrangements.
Thom Bell's departure hastened the slump, for such songs as "Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)" and "Thank You Baby" lacked the lyrical insight, flow, and rhyme scheme that characterized their past triumphs.

Due to the emphasis on sound and arrangement and the relative anonymity of many of the style's players, Philly soul is often considered a producers' genre.
Philly soul songwriters and producers, including Thom Bell, Linda Creed, and teams of Gene Mcfadden and John Whitehead, and Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff (the latter pair of Philadelphia International Records) worked with a stable of studio musicians to develop the unique Philly sound used as backing for many different singing acts.
Many of these musicians would record as the instrumental group MFSB which had a hit with the seminal Philly soul song "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" in 1974.

Re-alignments in personal relationships before and after Easter (with Irene Bell leaving Harry Bell for Brian Rouse, and Leroy Kettle's wife, Chris Atkinson, leaving him for Malcolm Edwards) created tensions in London and Newcastle, but whereas those among the Rats were soon resolved, those a few months later in the North-East split Gannetfandom in two.
Brian Rouse, Irene Bell, Thom and Cath Penman, and Alan Isaacson started meeting on Friday nights, but soon faded from the scene, leaving the remaining Gannets to form the nucleus of latter-day Gannetfandom.
