Thom the military guy was in the AIR FORCE...and I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers him.
The "Thom" you are referring to was in the NAVY, not the Air Force.
I know that back then, it was unheard of for a contestant to go on such a long streak like he did and win as many cars and as much money as he did, I barely remember some of the episodes he was on and when he lost, I lost my interest in the show.

In fact, watching the show for the second time ever when GSN played it during FOF '02, he almost seemed relieved to be through.
It seemed very much to me that Thom was sincerely wishing Erik well as the applause thundered on.
Ken Jennings and Thom McKee really don't fit the definition of 'loser' in my book.  They were gracious in victory and defeat, which is nice.

I mean, what did he do, call his boss and say "I'm kinda stuck on a game show in LA, I'll see ya in a few days?".
I would normally say two months combined, since if McKee was on 43 days (?), that would be eight-and-a-half taping days--and whether "TTD" taped one day a week or two days every other week, it would still average out.
You also have to remember that McKee's run was interrupted by the end of the 1979-80 season, so he had about three months with his run in limbo before he returned to TV City (they hadn't moved to KCOP yet).

So this air force guy named Thom McKee came along and set what I think was the record for consecutive wins on any game show.
He was the Curt Jennings of his day although the show was phenominally easier the Jeopardy.
When all was said and done, he had a 7 or 8 week run and accumulated that many ugly base model Century aero coupes.

A couple of other “Tic Tac Dough” winners hit 100,000 after long runs, but Tom’s streak was impressive, even if the questions were pretty damn easy.
I have never seen Thom McKee, or for that matter, the show “Tick Tac Dough.” From what I read, the questions were pretty easy, but even so, that’s alot of money for an “older” Game Show.
What I wanted to know though was: Is Thom’s story a scandal too, or was he just a guy that got “lucky?”

Ken Jennings is still at it after 18 wins and $601,760.
It is a far cry from the 43 wins a row registered by Thom McKee from 1979-1980 on Tic Tac Dough ($312,700 cash and 8 cars) but it is still pretty darn impressive.
