Thomas Arnold in Tom Brown's School Days
Arnold has the same effect on the teachers working under his direction at Rugby as he does on East and the other students.
Here (in case we had missed his point) Hughes explicitly states that Thomas Arnold appears to the young boy about to set off for Oxford as a true Carlylean hero-worshipper.
As the epigraph from the novel with which I began emphasizes, Arnold dies, and his death reminds Tom that God is the only one in whom he can place his trust.

Arnold, Thomas. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Arnold’s reforms were influential beyond Rugby itself; his changes were adopted by most of the English secondary schools.
Arnold’s expression of liberal political and theological views made him unpopular, however, and general recognition was not accorded him until 1841, when he was appointed regius professor of modern history at Oxford.
Thomas Arnold is portrayed in Tom Brown’s Schooldays (1857), a novel about life at Rugby by Thomas Hughes.

Thomas Arnold on the "Troubles of school-keeping"
Arnold states the seriousness of the situation and how it has discouraged him, but by the close of the letter he characteristically finds enough hope in the few young men he has encountered that he refuses to give up.
Several points in Arnold's letter demand comment, the first of which is his obvious recognition of the fundamental moral and educational problems created by the then-characteristic Public School combination of bullying, herd behavior, and a schoolboy code that held snitching the worst violation of it — even when it could stop terrible cruelty.
Arnold hardly exaggerates, since statements by graduates of his own Rugby and other schools, such as Eton, confirm the problems a reforming headmaster faced.

Thomas Arnold's Attitude toward the Protestant Reformation
This letter reveals Arnold's basic fairness and open-mindedness, for even while intensely disliking much of what Cobett has to say, he finds himself forced to agree that his points about the rapacious side of the Reformation in England and the bad effects upon the poor.
Arnold continues, sounding amazingly like a modern revolutionary, by approving of the French Revolution and all its violence, for, as he explains, "this blessing is enough to compensate the evils of the French Revolution; for the good endures, while the effects of the massacres and devastations are fast passing away" (78-79).
Arnold continues to surprise us by adding that, unlike so many other Victorians, such as Pugin, Carlyle, and Ruskin, who saw the Middle Ages as a wonderful time, he finds nothing but good in signs of its destruction.
