Thomas Adam Austin III, 73, a retired Army Colonel and infantry officer who served on several boards and as a Republican Party volunteer in Arlington, died of a heart ailment June 25, 2001, at Arlington Hospital.
David Austin, stationed in Belgium, Elizabeth Austin of Alexandria and Nell Horn of Severna Park; a sister; a brother; and 16 grandchildren.

Thomas played safety for head coach Sid Maxwell at Sequoyah High School, and he was named Cherokee County Defensive Player of the Year, Sequoyah Player of the Year, all-region defensive player of the year and all-state in his final campaign.
Thomas finished his senior year with 139 tackles and seven interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns, and he played half the season at running back and compiled 700 yards on the ground.
He rushed for seven touchdowns and caught three for a team that went to the state quarterfinals and finished fifth in Georgia.

At Thomas (I)'s burial in 1808 he was called a bachelor 84 years old, so he must have had no sons of his own and thus "adopted" Peter (III), the young son of Isaac, Thomas' assumed nephew.
Thomas (I) was also active in the community and signed the Archdeacon's transcripts as Bunwell churchwarden in the years 1761-63 (Film no.1526806).
Other Austin families of similar first names to ours (Peter, Elizabeth, John) were married in Wymondham parish during the same years, 1755-6 (Film no.1911511), but we have not yet found a blood relation to them.
