Marsh was basically a scholar, and was devoted to prayer and study.
While Marsh was Archbishop of Dublin and living as an old bachelor in the Palace of St. Sepulchre he arranged for his niece, young Grace Marsh, to look after the housekeeping for him.

Thomas B. Marsh(1799-1866) was the first ordained apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from 1835-1839.
Marsh signed an affidavit in 1838(?) that was critical of Joseph Smith and claimed he had organized a group called the "Danites" to murder those who opposed him.
It was said by Elder Thomas Job, a missionary serving in Utah, that shortly before his death he attended a conference of the Reorganized Church and claimed that Young Joseph was a prophet, and that he would attempt to move east to join them.

Marsh was a good man, and he undoubtedly made mistakes too, but I should think that under the circumstances we could have some sympathy for his fear and the actions he took.

According to Marsh's autobiographical sketch, published in 1864: :In January, 1835, in company with Bishop Partridge and agreeable to revelation, I proceeded to Kirtland, where we arrived early in the spring, when I learned I had been chosen one of the Twelve Apostles.
According to his sworn testimony, Marsh claimed that a Mormon invasion of Daviess County, MissouriDaviess County and the subsequent looting and burning of non-Mormon settlements, including Gallatin, MissouriGallatin the county seat, were the acts that caused him to leave.
Because a Mormon attack was believed imminent, a unit of the state militia from Ray County, MissouriRay County was dispatched to patrol the border between Ray and Mormon Caldwell County, MissouriCaldwell County to the north.

Thomas B. Marsh is portrayed as conflicting with Joseph Smith over who had authority to send the Twelve on missions abroad.
On July 23, 1837, the day that the gospel was first preached in England, Marsh sits across a desk from Smith and receives Section 112 from the prophet's mouth: "Verily I say unto you, there have been some few things in thine heart and with thee with which I, the Lord, was not well pleased.
It is interesting that both Marsh and Joseph Smith have been reported to express the sentiment that they would be willing to "go to hell" for their wife.

The prime reason for denying his recognition seems to be the fact that the did not return to Ithaca in the fall of 1890, even though he was actively involved in the inception of the fraternity during the 1889-90 school year when it, at least on an informal basis, actually came into existence.
