Thomas Brackett Reed Biography / Biography of Thomas Brackett Reed Biography
Thomas B. Reed was born on Oct. 18, 1839, in Portland, Maine, an origin stamped in the nasal drawl in which he delivered the corrosive witticisms for which he became famous.
Congressman Reed's first important assignment was to the "Potter Committee," appointed in 1878 to investigate alleged fraud in the Hayes-Tilden presidential election of 1876.
Representing the Republican minority, Reed demonstrated that his party was not alone in fraud and even managed to implicate the nephew of Democratic candidate Samuel J. Tilden.

REED, Thomas B., senator, born in Kentucky" died in Lexington, Kentucky, 26 November, 1829.
There he found a wide field for the exercise of his talents in the solution of the intricate questions that arose from the variety of land-tenures and the difficulty of applying the rules of common law to the novel conditions of frontier life.
Reed settled at Natchez, and made his appearance in the supreme court of the state in the first criminal case that was brought before that tribunal, "The State against the Blennerhassetts," which he argued for the defence at the June term in 1818.

There is a record of Thomas Reed buying land in section 35 (the SE corner) of Welton Township and 40 adjacent acres in section 2 of De Witt township in Clinton county, April 6, 1848, from John Holst and wife.
I think the 24yr old Thomas was a son of the older one since he (the 24 year old) has no family then and later moves to Washington township (instead of dying there in De Witt township).
Another problem with the theory of burying the older Thomas Reed at De Witt pre-1850, is that in John Lucey's history of St. Joseph's church of De Witt, he says that the cemetery there first came into use in 1853.

At his zenith, his contemporaries called him "the greatest parliamentary leader of his time…far and away the most brilliant figure in American politics." Although he was the descendant of a Mayflower family, he was solidly middle class and had all of the level-headed attributes of that stoic breed.
Reed’s sluggishness was that of a man for whom the fight has turned sour...Reed’s whole life was in the qualification that for him it had to be exercised toward an end that he believed in.
The passing of Thomas Reed from power marked a crucial crossroads in the path to Empire.

Thomas B. Reed deserves better, for his name lives on in Reed's Rules, the guide to parliamentary procedure that governs the operations of the House of Representatives (and many state legislatures) to this day.
Like most prominent late-19th-century American politicians, Reed was a Civil War veteran, though he freely admitted that his one year spent aboard a U.S. Navy gunboat plying the Mississippi had never brought him under enemy fire.
Upon reaching the end, Reed declared that a quorum was present in the chamber.
