Jack Dunphy on John Gotti on National Review Online
I gave no more thought to the place that evening until I watched the eleven o'clock news.
The top story, with lots of video of covered bodies and blood trickling into the gutter, was the murder of mobsters Paul Castellano and Thomas Bilotti, who were gunned down on the sidewalk outside the restaurant where I had trod no more than an hour before.
Any interference I might have offered surely would have been harshly met, and my trip to New York would have concluded prematurely and most unpleasantly, probably on a slab at the New York morgue in the disreputable company of two characters in shiny suits and see-through socks.

 Paul Castellano
When Paul Castellano and his driver, Thomas Bilotti, were shot to death in front of a steakhouse on New York's East Side on December 16, 1985, the story made headlines around the country.
Overlooked in virtually all accounts was that the assassinations, as the men stepped from a Lincoln limousine, had been one of the easiest hits on a don and his bodyguard ever.
Neither Castellano nor Bilotti were armed, and neither had taken even the simple precaution of having a backup car of armed gunmen for protection.

Gotti and Locascio were also charged in separate counts for a conspiracy to obstruct grand jury investigations, bribery of a public servant, and a conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Gotti argues that the sequestration of an anonymous jury denied him and Locascio a fair trial because of the district court's failure to adequately state the reasons for sequestration, and because of the prosecution's inflammatory use of the sequestration to influence the jury against Gotti.
