Chippendale's name is emphatically identified with the extensive variety of chair types that he developed—from geometrical to Chinese, lattice, or sumptuously carved and interlaced forms.
Chippendale's varied output also included desks; mirror frames; hanging bookshelves; settees, with which he was especially successful; china cabinets and bookcases, frequently with fretted cornices and latticework glazed doors; and tables with delicately fretted galleries and distinctive cluster-column legs of Gothic inspiration.
Chippendale's style, quickly imported to America, was imitated by a number of expert cabinetmakers.

This may be another of the many indications that Chippendale was himself an imitator, or it may be that Adam, as architect, prescribed designs which Chippendales cabinetmakers and carvers executed.
In the rather bombastic introduction Chippendale says that he has been encouraged to produce the book by persons of distinction and taste, who have regretted that an art capable of so much perfection and refinement should be executed with so little propriety and elegance.
Chippendale has even shared with Sir William Chambers the obloquy of introducing the Chinese style, but he appears to have done nothing worse than conquer, as Alexandre Dumas used to call it, the ideas of other people.

Although head of an important firm, Chippendale was not the greatest of all English furniture makers, and his exaggerated posthumous reputation is attributable largely to the Director.
Chippendale's name is given indiscriminately to great quantities of mid-18th-century furniture; but, in fact, only comparatively few pieces can be assigned with certainty to his workshop.
The superb satinwood and inlaid commodes (possibly designed by Thomas Chippendale II) and other furniture at Harewood House are masterpieces of the cabinetmaker's craft, upon which his reputation may safely rest.

Chippendale supplied twenty chairs and two sofas covered in red leather for the Harewood dining room, as well as the magnificent sideboard suite, decorated with expensive marquetry work and embellished with lavish ormolu mounts.
What is significant about this piece is the simplicity of it's design with the only decorative elements being the pointed Gothic arches, which join the six legs, and the blind fretwork along the frieze.
This illustrates that Chippendale continued to use successful designs over ten years after they were first published.
