"Thomas Jefferson [1743-1826] is very often cited as the 'father' of American archaeology, and he certainly attempted one of the first archaeological explanations of the question ["Who Got here First?"] when he wrote in his famous 'Notes on Virginia' (1787) about an Indian mound that he had excavated many years before.
He must have read Darwin's Origin of Species soon after its publication in 1859 for the theory of evolution clearly inspired him to formulate his own theory of the 'Evolution of Culture' which he was to expound in a lecture of that title in 1875.
This theory, and his large collection of ethnographic objects which illustrated it, brought him to the notice of the scientific establishment and soon he was regarded as an equal of such men as Thomas Huxley, the champion of Darwinian evolution, Herbert Spencer, the sociologist and Sir John Lubbock, the naturalist and antiquarian.

At the center of the picture stands an imposing figure--Roger Milliken, the billionaire textile baron from South Carolina.
He is not the Moriarty of protectionism: He does not orchestrate everything (there is, in particular, a parallel but mostly distinct anti-globalization network funded by labor unions rather than industrialists), and even those who benefit from his largess do not always do his bidding.
More interesting is Milliken's role in supporting institutions that help create an appearance of intellectual legitimacy for his cause.

The America experiment was launched in revolt against the existing order, against corrupt kings and their equally corrupt business partners.
