Thomas Coke (1747–1814) was born in the Welsh town of Brecon, the son of a wealthy apothecary.
Coke was driven from his curacy in 1776 because of his evangelical leanings and he then joined with the Methodists.
Coke died while en route to India as the leader of the first Methodist mission to that country.

Wesley spoke affectionately of Thomas Coke as a flea, for it seemed the man "hopped" relentlessly in the service of the gospel.
Wesley's response was not what Coke expected: the young man was to "go on in the same path...visiting from house to house." A few months later a new senior minister, hostile to Methodist convictions, arrived in the parish.
Coke was to be the first Methodist bishop in the new world.

Biography: Son of Thomas Ruckle, a self-taught artist and house and sign painter, Thomas Coke Ruckle was formally trained at the Royal Academy of London from 1839-1841 and returned to Baltimore to become a famous portraitist.
While Thomas Coke Ruckle was first heard of as an artist in Baltimore in 1833, listed in the city directory as a portrait painter, he did not have a studio there until his return from Europe in 1841.
Thomas Coke Ruckle also became an illustrator: he executed a "Wild Western Scenes" series as well as drawings for churches and preachers in a book called "Early History of Methodism in Maryland" (1866).

In the year of his ordination he read Thomas à Kempis and Jeremy Taylor, and began to seek the religious truths which underlay the great revival of the 18th century.
When he had waited long enough, and the Bishop of London had refused to ordain a minister for the American Methodists who were without the ordinances, Wesley ordained preachers for Scotland and England and America, with power to administer the sacraments in 1784.
