In 1825 Thomas County was formed from portions of Irwin and Decatur counties and named for Jett Thomas, a hero of the War of 1812 (1812-15).
After the railroad expanded to Thomas County in 1861, wealthy and elite northerners, seeking a retreat from cold winters and the subsequent threat of illness, began flocking to genteel Thomasville, the county seat.
The Thomas County School District is composed of seven schools and serves all students who live in the county outside the city limits of Thomasville.

General Election results have Judge Jim Hardy of Thomas County winning a full four-year term as a Superior Court Judge on the Southern Judicial Circuit and a Democratic incumbent on the Thomas County school board replaced by her Republican challenger.
Circuit wide, or the counties of Thomas, Brooks, Colquitt, Lowndes and Echols, Hardy had 21,293 votes to Tunison's 12,741 votes with 93% of the precincts reporting.
The SPLOST for Thomas County was approved by voters during the General Primary on Tuesday, July 18, and Kevin Reid, the incumbent for District 3 on the Thomas County School Board, was defeated by challenger Charles Evans.

Thomas Edward Blackshear, planter, soldier, and politician, was born in Montgomery County, Georgia, on August 18, 1809, the son of Edward and Emily (Mitchell) Blackshear.
He graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens in 1828 and married Thomas County native Emily Goodwyn Raines (1814-1866) on December 8, 1831; they became the parents of nine children.
As a planter of some means and scion of a distinguished Georgia family, Blackshear became a civic leader in the Thomasville area and served in the Georgia House of Representatives during the 1830s and in the Senate during the 1840s.

The third William B. Barwick living in Thomas County in 1850 was a son of John J. Barwick who was an older brother of William B. Barwick, Jr., born in Darlington District, South Carolina, on 8 June 1791.
William Bluford Barwick (son of John J. Barwick) served as a wagoner with Company C of the 12th Georgia Militia, which participated in the Atlanta campaign and surrendered at the end of the war at Augusta, Georgia.
He died at Pine Park in Thomas County, Georgia, on 5 April 1879 and was buried at the Long Branch Baptist Church in Thomas (now Grady) County, Georgia, as were both of his wives.
