Thomas Dadford junior, who was working with his father and Thomas Sheasby as contractor for the Glamorganshire Canal, was asked to do the survey.
By Mid 1792 Thomas Dadford Junior found it necessary to leave his post of General Surveyor, due to his being given the contract to build the Monmouthshire Canal.
Boating on the canal is confined to those who can trail their boats, or to the public boat trips that are available either on the "Thomas Dadford", owned by the Neath and Tennant Canal Preservation Society, or the "Erlys Neath", belonging to West Glamorganshire County Council.

The route had been surveyed by Thomas Dadford junior who preferred to build his locks grouped closely together in flights rather than build them at intervals all along the route.
Dadford's recommended line from Brecon to Pontypool was 33 miles long and the scheme was also to include 3 tramways which would connect the canal to local industries.
John Dadford (junior's brother) was appointed engineer on the first tramway on the Brecknockshire and Abergavenny "Canal".

In 1789 the engineer Tomas Dadford Jr, was employed to survey the proposed route of the canal.
Thomas Dadford carried out the survey and as a result revised his plans to include an extension of the canal as far as Kington, which would increase the total distance of the route to 46 miles and was estimated to cost £150,000.
One reason why Dadford chose the final route may have been because Thomas Harley, the largest shareholder, wanted the canal to serve his own estates on the Berrington side of the valley.

Thomas Telford took advantage of the new adjacent Plas Kynaston Foundry where William Hazeldine was casting the deck of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in 1805 to produce cast-iron arched ribs to support the elegant segmental arches of masonry of the two canal overbridges at the north end of the aqueduct.
The deep cutting proposed by Telford for the new low summit-level of the Birmingham Canal Navigation necessitated the use of the early type of large-span cast-iron arched-bridge developed by Telford in association with the ironfounder William Hazeldine.
In 1827 Thomas Telford opened a larger parallel tunnel which had a horse towpath and one-way traffic was introduced on both tunnels.

It might seem to be beyond the plans of the wildest canal pioneers to build a canal across Iceland, but Thomas Dadford Tertius, on a Grand Tour financed by his famous father and grandfather, took up Icelandic citizenship as the walruses reminded him of the natives of the frigid wastes of Essington and Perry Barr.
However, given the chronic American inability to understand geography, they were reported as coming from Lapland rather than Iceland.
Few know that Thomas Dadford Tertius was responsible for the origin of a modern myth, a myth made in Birmingham.
