As (A member of a Catholic church) Catholics, his family faced persecution after the overthrow of (Son of James I who was King of England and Scotland and Ireland; was deposed and executed by Oliver Cromwell (1600-1649)) Charles I and fled to (A republic in western Europe; the largest country wholly in Europe) France.
In 1682, James, who had become the Lord Proprietor of the Province of New York after it was acquired from the (The West Germanic language of the Netherlands) Dutch, appointed Dongan as provincial governor and granted him an estate on (A borough of New York City) Staten Island.
At the time of his appointment, the province was bankrupt and in a state of rebellion caused by the mismanagement of the previous governor.

On the Earl’s death, Donald was inaugurated Prince, and possessed himself of the castles of Clonroad and Clare, to the exclusion of his nephew, Connor, now Earl of Thomond; but (1585) the Earl of Sussex having entered Thomond, took the castle of Clonroad, and put the Earl in possession.
Earl Connor having been favourably received by the Queen, was restored to his lands; but from that time Bunratty Castle appears to have been the chief residence of the Earls of Thomond.
