Manx Quarterly #7 p626/641 - Thomas Edward Brown
If Browning be right when he contends that facts are only permanent when they are preserved in artistic way, then may we be sure that the Manx traditions will for ever live in the poetry of T. Brown.
Thomas Edward Brown, the third son (the sixth of ten children) of the Rev Robert Brown and Dorothy his wife, was born on the fifth of May, 1830, in New Bond-street, Douglas.
As a boy, Brown was timid and shy, and showed none o: that brilliant wit, vivacity and geniality that so distinguished him as a man. But notwithstanding his shyness, a shyness that never really left him, he lived, by choice, in the centre of the family.

THOMAS EDWARD BROWN (1830-1897), British poet, scholar and divine, was born on the 5th of May 1830, at Douglas, Isle of Man.
Although at that time an Oriel fellowship conferred a deserved distinction, Brown never took kindly to the life, but, after a few terms of private pupils, returned to the Isle of Man as vice-principal of his old school.
Brown's more important poems are narrative, and written in the Manx dialect, with a free use of pauses, and sometimes with daring irregularity of rhythm.

At Clifton, Brown remained from September 1863 to July 1892, when he retired--to the great regret of boys and masters alike, who had long since come to regard "T.E.B.'s" genius, and even his eccentricities, with a peculiar pride--to spend the rest of his days upon.
Brown's more important poems are narrative, and written in the Anglo-Manx dialect, with a free use of pauses, and sometimes with daring irregularity of rhythm.

Though not far from harbour or sea, the house was surrounded by a network of insanitary alleys, all of which were demolished in the clearances of this part of Douglas in the 1930's.
In this house, which also no longer exists, on 5th May 1830, Thomas Edward Brown was born, 6th child and 4th son of chaplain Robert Brown and his wife Dorothy.
In 1832, when Thomas Edward was just 2 years old, the Rev. Thomas Howard took over charge of St. George’s Douglas, and transferred the Rev. Robert Brown from St. Matthew’s to Braddan, where he was nominally curate, and two years later was inducted as vicar.
