Thomas Edward Rendle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomas Edward Rendle (December 14, 1884 - June 1, 1946) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 29 years old, and a Bandsman in the 1st Battalion, The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 20 November 1914 near Wulverghem, Belgium, Bandsman Rendle attended to the wounded under very heavy rifle and shell fire and rescued men from the trenches in which they had been buried from the blowing in of the parapets by the fire of the enemy's heavy howitzers.

 Sgt Thomas Edward Rendle (1884 - 1946) - Find A Grave Memorial
Rendle was awarded the V.C. for action near Wulverghem, Belgium, in the southeastern part of the Ypres Salient, November 20, 1914.
Rendle’s unit, the 1st battalion of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, had taken over a section of trenches from the French XVI Corps, who had not prepared them the way the British might have liked, since French policy at that time was never to prepare for the defensive.
Rendle, who, like all bandsmen, served as a stretcher bearer when under fire, rescued an officer who had been seriously struck by shrapnel flying into his supposedly (relatively) safe position, sitting in the bottom of a trench.

The first passage just quoted speaks to the fact that "the story" is fertile common ground on which the generations can meet; the biblical story that overlays Christianity's story, that overlays your congregation's story, and finally the personal stories of each person, creating a rainbow of stories.
The competition Rendle describes in the second quote can be transformed into community shaping and faith formation.
Without using the exact term, she points out the common ground on which cross-generational worship can be built.

On 20 November 1914 Bdsm Thomas Edward Rendle was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery near Wolverghem in attending to the wounded and rescuing men from blown-out trenches under enemy fire; most notably he crawled across open ground carrying a badly wounded officer on his back, despite being in full view of the Germans.
His courage was matched only by his modesty: when asked for an interview by a local newspaper, he shrugged off the incident, saying 'there is really nothing in it.' At the end of the war, Mr Rendle returned to the Band, ending his career as the Band Sergeant of the 1st Battalion.

Bandsman Thomas Edward Rendle was engaged in attending to one of the wounded, whose number was increasing every minute, when a huge shell struck the parapet not far from him, blowing the top completely in and burying several wounded men beneath the debris.
Without waiting to look for a spade or to summon assistance, for he knew that there was not a moment to be lost, the bandsman ran to the rescue, and began digging away furiously with his hands, and burrowing through the fallen earth to reach his unfortunate comrades.
Bandsman Rendle was awarded the Victoria Cross, “for conspicuous bravery,” and well indeed did he deserve to have his name inscribed upon the most glorious roll of honour!

Be somewhat consoled: Even at the early junctures of the Twentieth Century, observers warned of the growing complexity of pastoral ministry.
In their remarkable study of former and current business leaders, Warren Bennis and Robert Thomas expressed some surprise when their findings noted that leaders, regardless of their era, demonstrated a resilient “adaptive capacity” under trials (Bennis and Thomas 2002).
Some crucibles are self-chosen, but many just happened in life; but all trials forced the leader to see the world in a new light, to think creatively, to depend upon others and develop the ability to inspire others.
