THOMAS ELLWOOD - LoveToKnow Article on THOMAS ELLWOOD
While he was still young his father removed to London, where Thomas became acquainted with a Quaker family named Pennington~ and was led to join the Society of Friends, a connection which subjected him to much persecution.
After a period of imprisonment in the old Bridewell prison and in Newgate for Quakerism, Ellwood resumed his visits to Milton, who was now residing at a house his friend had taken for him at Chalfont St Giles.
Ellwood was the friend of Fox and Penn, and was the author of several polemical works in defence of the Quaker position, of which Forgery no Christianity (1674) and The Foundation of Tithes Shaken (1678) deserve mention.

It was Ellwood, according to a doubtful tradition 3 who, after reading with delight the manuscript of Paradise Lost, suggested to Milton the theme afterwards worked out in Paradise Regained.
The History of the Life of Thomas Ellwood, written by his own hand, gives a very lively picture of his early life and home surroundings, of inward struggles, of “passive resistance” to the monstrous tyranny of his father, and of his share in the persecutions to which all his people were subjected.
Ellwood took him to a meeting at Isaac Penington’s, which was unexpectedly broken up by a troop of horse: 4

Ellwood and some thirty of his friends were marched off to prison in Old Bridewell, which, as well as nearly all the other prisons, was already crowded with Quaker prisoners.
Ellwood himself seems to have been on the point of yielding to this notion, which appears to have been the occasion of a good deal of dissension and scandal.
Thomas Ellwood, in his autobiography for the year 1659, mentions Nayler, whom he met in company with Edward Burrough at the house of Milton's friend, Pennington.

Thomas Wilson--erroneously designated Sir Thomas Wilson, presumably because he has been confounded with a knight of that name--was born about 1525, educated at Eton and subsequently at King's College, Cambridge, whence he graduated B.A. in 1549.
Our debt to Ellwood is, it must be admitted, much less than it might have been, if he had thought a little more of Milton and a little less of his somewhat stupid self and the sect to which he belonged.
Ellwood seems to imply that _Paradise Regained_ was composed between the end of August or the beginning of September 1665, and the end of the autumn of the same year, which is, of course, incredible and quite at variance with what Phillips tells us.

Thomas Ellwood, who was born in 1639, in the reign of Charles the First, carried the story of his life in this book to the year 1683, when he was forty-four years old.
The observation Ellwood made, of which he is proud because of its consequence, might well cause Milton to be silent for a little while, and then change the conversation.
