Thomas Bayard was born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 29, 1828, the son of future Delaware senator James Asheton Bayard Jr.
Although he did not attend college, Thomas Bayard studied law privately and was admitted to the Delaware bar in 1851.
After an extensive time practicing law in Wilmington, Bayard was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat (1869-1885) and served as a key leader of his party during Reconstruction.

Built for the Delaware Bay Pilots at Lewes and named for a U.S. senator from Delaware, Thomas F. Bayard was probably designed by the same man who designed the schooner Sappho, one of two successful defenders of the America's Cup in 1871.
Still with her original name (Bayard was now U.S. Secretary of State), she was sold to the White Star Steamship Company and spent nine years freighting people and supplies to the diggings in Alaska during the gold rush years.
After six years as a pilot boat she was sold to the Alaska Transport, Trading and Mining Company, of Philadelphia, and sailed to San Francisco via Cape Horn, arriving on the West Coast in July 1888.
