Cowling returned to the University of Wales in 1945 when he was appointed to a professorship in the Department of Mathematics at the University College of North Wales in Bangor.
Thomas Cowling left Bangor in 1948 to become a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Leeds, where he remained until his retirement in 1970, and where he continued as an emeritus professor until his death in 1990.
The importance of Thomas Cowling's work was recognised by the award of the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1956 and the Bruce Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in 1985.

Cowling studied mathematics at Brasenose College, Oxford from 1924 to 1930.
Cowling showed that Larmor's explanation was incorrect and his article assured him of a good reputation in the field of astrophysics.

 Cowling biography
Thomas attended Sir George Monoux Grammar School at Walthamstow from 1917 to 1923.
The result of this was that after Cowling completed his doctorate in 1930, Chapman offered him a position as a demonstrator in the Mathematics Department at Imperial College where he worked for three years before being appointed as an assistant lecturer in mathematics at Swansea University.
Cowling's main contributions were in the areas of stellar structure, cosmical magnetism, kinetic theory and plasma-physics.

Cowling was born in Walthamstow, Essex, and studied at Oxford.
Cowling was responsible for demonstrating the existence of a convective core in stars, suggesting that the Sun may behave like a giant dynamo whose rotation, internal circulation, and convection produce the immensely powerful electric currents and magnetic fields associated with sunspots.
The restriction to axisymmetric fields in Cowling's theorem was not appreciated and, for many years, it inhibited the development of the idea of a dynamo.

 The Bruce Medalists: Thomas Cowling
Arthur Milne at Oxford, Thomas Cowling did research with Sydney Chapman at Imperial College, London and taught applied mathematics at the universities of Wales (University College Swansea), Dundee, Manchester, and Bangor.
He was first to compute a stellar model (the “Cowling model”) with a convective core and a radiative envelope.
Later Cowling studied sunspots and developed much of the theory of magnetic fields in stars and magnetospheres, including the Sun-Earth connection.
