  Thomas Harrison
Thomas Harrison, the son of a butcher, was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1606.
Harrison was elected to the House of Commons in 1646 and soon emerged as one of the leaders of the radicals.
Harrison retained his radical political ideas and became a member of the Fifth Monarchist group that sought the abolition of tithes, an increase in the help for the poor and the release of debtors from prison.

Following the Restoration, Harrison declined to flee and was arrested in May 1660, tried in October, and was the first of the Regicides to be executed by being hanged, drawn and quartered on October 14, 1660.

Harrison seems to have consulted and digested most of the scholarly work on Persai known to me (and some not known) -- I count 469 items in the bibliography -- and he is not sparing in his citation of other's views, especially those with whom he disagrees.
Harrison wishes to subsume all other aspects of the play under the purpose that he deems to be overarching: glorification of Athens, her democratic institutions, the diversity of the points of view that must be given a voice in hers as in any democracy, and above all, her nascent empire.
Harrison's book, like the drama it analyzes, is bound to stir some controversy of its own, but if it challenges assumptions that some of us have held for a long time and perhaps rather uncritically, and gets us to look again at this enigmatic masterpiece and our aesthetic reactions to it, so much the better.

Herodotus' Conception of Foreign Languages   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
If we take the list of loan words from the Near East compiled by Thomas Braun, Herodotus emerges as including in his Histories all but one of the archaic near-eastern loan words,[30] and a substantial proportion, five out of eighteen, of those words Braun classes as classical loan words.
Of course, references to foreign words in extant Greek literature are hardly a reliable guide to general Greek usage; we certainly cannot argue from the silence of other sources that Herodotus was the first to discover a foreign word.
A full discussion of the arguments will form an appendix to Harrison (n.109).
