Based on the strong motion inversion models of Hartzell and Heaton (1986) and Beroza and Spudich (1988), we assume a rupture approximately 12 km in length and 10 km deep having a seismic moment of 2.5 x 10^25 dyne-cm.
Heaton (1990) points out that the duration of slip for the 1985 Michoacan earthquake (Ms=8.5) was on the order of 5 sec as indicated from near-field displacements obtained from twice integrated accelerograms.

 Finding Faults
Until the 1980s, scientists had no records of major quakes along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which stretches from British Columbia to northern California and is the largest and most active fault in the lower 48 states.
Scientists, such as Dr. Thomas Heaton, a professor of engineering seismology at Cal Tech, began comparing geographic and geologic features of the Cascadia zone to those found in Alaska and Chile where major earthquakes had occurred.
Through clever scientific sleuthing, Atwater, Heaton and their colleagues have rewritten the history of earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest, revealing a richer seismic character in a region much more prone to massive quakes than previously thought.

A third paper examines how well two types of buildings can be expected to hold up during an imagined large earthquake directly under Los Angeles.
This study, "Response of High-Rise and Base-Isolated Buildings to a Hypothetical MW 7.0 Blind-Thrust Earthquake," was written by seismologists Thomas Heaton and David Wald of the USGS in Pasadena, John Hall, an associate professor of civil engineering at Caltech, and Marvin Halling, a former Caltech graduate student who is now at Utah State University.
To test the expected behavior of buildings, the seismologists combined a theoretical model of an earthquake with actual seismic recordings to simulate the ground motions at 121 locations spread over 3025 square kilometers (1170 square miles).
