The Henderson Heritage Trail is a joint venture by the West Auckland Historical Society and the Waitakere City Council as a contribution to the Henderson 150 Commemoration (1844 - 1994).
Henderson's Creek was shown on early maps as "Mill River", as kauri timber was shipped down the river to the harbour from Henderson's Mill.
The "Falls Recreation Ground" was purchased and developed by the Henderson Town Board from 1923 to 1925, and was a popular picnic area, playground, swimming hole and overnight anchorage during the 1920s and 1930s.

Thomas and Margaret Henderson of Gravesend, with their family, emigrated to New Zealand in 1876 and were the progenitors of the Australian and New Zealand branches of the family.

In 1881, he and fellow boarder Harold Hudson took a job to claim uninhabited Jarvis Island near the equator (valued for its guano) in the name of Thomas Henderson of Henderson and MacFarlane.
They only intended to be on the island for the three months required for the claim, but the ship due to collect them did not arrive and they struggled to survive.
His marine photography was greatly admired both within New Zealand and overseas, with several images winning awards.
