  Thomas Hood at Old Poetry
Sometimes dismissed as a 'lesser poet' of the Romantic Era, Thomas Hood was known in his lifetime as a comic writer.
In addition to his poetry, Hood wrote a collection of stories, National Tales, and a three-volume prose novel, Tylney Hall, which sold well upon publication in 1834 but did not save his ailing finances (he was forced to move to the Continent for a time).
Hood was sub-editor of the London Magazine for a time, and then in 1829, the editor of The Gem, which published works by Alfred Lord Tennyson, amongst others.

 Life of Thomas 3
Hood's line was nearly seven miles in length, but did not touch the Cumberland River at either end, and consequently Nashville was not invested even on the south side of the river, though, it is fair to say, all communication between Thomas' army and the country south of it was suspended.
Thomas was told that he had a great opportunity, and was urged so strongly to destroy Hood's army in retreat as to imply, that the victorious general was either ignorant of the grand possibility, or needed special spurring to gather the fruits of victory.
Hood having effected his escape, the corps was ordered to Eastport for the purpose of refitting and resting, Before this order was received, however, Hatch, Hammond and Harrison had marched to Athens, on the road to Huntsville, in, pursuance of previous instructions from General Thomas.

Son of a London bookseller, Hood apprenticed as an engraver, but was compelled by ill health to turn to writing.
Despite the contemporary popularity of his triple-decker novel Tylney Hall (1834) and his reputation as a humourist, Tom Hood is best known as the author of "The Song of the Shirt," which he published anonymously in the extra Christmas number of London's newest and most celebrated comic weekly magazine, Punch, in 1843.
Based on a previous account by Punch editor Douglas Jerrold of a woman accused of pawning articles belonging to her employer, the poem attacks the exploitation of the cheap labour of seamstresses, the poem was quickly reprinted in The Times, and translated into German, French, Italian, and Russian for newspaper publication abroad.

The astrological instruments of Thomas Hood
So while Hood’s instruments will repay further study to place them precisely within their contemporary astrological context, I think it unlikely that they represent a unique or essential staging post in the narrative of the history of astrology.
The tulip rete carries the signature ‘Thomas Hood fecit 1597’ and, although nothing else is signed, the instruments are all evidently by the same hand.
From this review of Hood’s career, it is evident that at least the explicitly dated astrological instrument pair occupies a very particular moment, when he was seeking a licence to practice medicine in London.

[minstrels] Thomas Hood -- Edwin Arlington Robinson
It displays, as usual, his uncanny ability to capture a person's essence in a few short lines, and the way he can evoke sympathy without being overly sentimental.
As for the poem's content itself, it is a fairly straightforward assessment of Hood's poetic output: It would be easy to dismiss Hood as a lesser poet of the Romantic Era and early Victorian age, but his contribution was far greater than most realise.
This is, in the end, as much an epitaph of Hood as it is an assessment.
